Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Once Zelda goes open world, will it ever go back? *EDITED*

So basically, this.  Zelda was the first major open-world game.  You could even do some of the dungeons completely out of order if you were good enough.  In the old days, we didn't even get a turorial or a map...

That's because the first Zelda's world wasn't big. It was open, yes, but it wasn't so big that you got tired going through it, also the games was pretty short. It wasn't repetitive either.

Nowadays nintendo can't and won't do an open world zelda game that short and that small. It's really not a good comparison.

The first Zelda was massive for its day.

At the expense of freedom and exploration.

Yeah, they removed way too much of both - while I can, sort of, understand their logic behind "hardware problem" with N64, from GC onward that was really not the case, so it must've been preference.

Honestly, I hope they take a few pointers from some of western devs, specifically few Euro-RPG devs, who managed to strike quite good balance between open-worlds and narrative structures in the past.

I hope not. Western devs absolutely suck at making open world games not boring or ridged. I hope they do a completely new approach to open world, because not even Kojima got open world right. The last thing Zelda needs to be is influenced by Skyrim, or AssCreed, or Far Cry, or The Witcher, or Fallout, or any of the other painfully boring excuses for open worlds these days.

No one's gotten it right in 3D, so don't copy them. If they just expand apon the structure found in ALBW, that will be enough.

I'm really pathetic and have no friends. Please excuse the trolling message that used to be here, I don't know any better.

And only ranks as the greatest game ever created. ;)

After OOT, the Aonuma took over the LoZ team. It's obvious which path they were going to follow given fan and critic reception to OOT. Hardware had nothing to do with it.

I absolutely agree with you.

If we include everyone that has made open world games then two words, Xenoblade Chronicles.

Not really the games I was referring to - I don't agree all of those games are boring, though, it's true that most of them are but a shadow of either their predecessors (Skyrim being probably the worst offender) or games they are copying.

Few of us around here who played Gothic 1/2 and who are fans of Pirhana Bytes know what I'm talking about, but, honestly, one really needs to have played those games to understand that balance between open world and narrative has already been done properly in fully 3D worlds - just not in mainstream RPGs, I suppose.

Anyway, wasn't really talking about copy/pasting designs of any particular game, more about taking some pointers in some aspects - though, IMO, they would have to go some 10-15 years back, when Western devs were making RPGs primarily for RPG fans, not for mainstream audience.

But, eventually, I'm hoping they'll surprise us all with someting new and fresh.
