Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony Takes Over New York City with the Newly-Opened PlayStation Theater in Times Square

As the holidays approach and Sony prepares for a big lineup, those that live in New York City will be getting an extra dose of PlayStation goodness all year round with the company revealing its new concert and live events venue, the PlayStation Theater.

A new post on the PlayStation Blog revealed that Sony has officially opened the PlayStation Theater and taking over Times Square’s 45,000-square foot, 2,150-capacity concert and special events venue. The renaming of the venue officially takes effect today, after the venue was previously known as the Best Buy Theater.

The PlayStation Blog notes that the partnership will include “the rebranding of all of the Theater’s interior and exterior signage, including the iconic Times Square marquee, live performances on PlayStation Network, experiential marketing initiatives, and VIP hospitality opportunities.”

With the venue hosting concerts from acts such as Bon Jovi, The Eagles, John Legend, Rihanna, and countless others alongside special events such as the annual Dick Clark’s Rockin’ New Year’s Eve and more, the PlayStation Theater will continue to bring great live events and entertainment all year round with a tinge of the PlayStation brand – the full lineup of events, concerts, and more coming to the theater for the rest of the year can be seen here.

The PlayStation Theater is officially open starting today at Times Square in New York City – check back later as we’ll be sure to get plenty of photos and pictures of the theater for its opening day today.

Nice, in Toronto we have Sony Theatre for the performing arts, and it is an amazing place. Video Game Orchestra and Zelda Orchestra is usually held there.

PlayStation Theater? Wonder if there are any actual PlayStations in the area?

Sony is ON FIRE this Gen...DAYUM!!!

It's better move than using UFC fighters to promote their games or console.

I could see this being the butt of many bad jokes about "movie games."

I WON A BET AGAINST AZUREN! WOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Sony are turning into microsoft last gen, the only difference is, all this 'tv, sports, entertainment' big push they are doing isn't stopping the flow or focus on games at all. They've still had 2 conferences this year, with more games 'announced for ps4' than games 'shown for ps4 but previously announced' and two more to go, not even including their large announcement list from last year too.

They're really trying to push the brand further in the USA to steal the momentum microsoft had for last year. A lot fo big events and promotions usually had an xbox logo in there, but now, this, the mainstream ip marketing (Batman, Star wars, Assassins creed and call of duty) and the multitude of services (playstation tv box, playstation original series, playstation music) shows how sony are trying to push the playstation brand further than the sony brand. Thanks Kaz!

Sounds like a smart decision. Sony is really doing almost everything right regarding marketing this gen and this is being a major player.

Bet with Teeqoz for 2 weeks of avatar and sig control that Super Mario Odyssey would ship more than 7m on its first 2 months. The game shipped 9.07m, so I won

I think the major difference between Sony and MS, is that somewhere along the lone MS felt or decided that games alone wasn't enough to carry the Xbox brand. so they decided to expand, nothing wrong with that... but their downfall was that their message became "he you can do all these great things with your Xbox, and oh we play games too"

Sony simply put games front and centre and are basically saying its cool enough to just play games and yh you can also do this and that if you want to.

Biggest mistake ever for MS was how they unveiled the XB1. Its like they just completely forgot who their audience was.
