There are 2 main ways of saving in videos games, auto saves and manual saves. While some exclusively have one and others have both I've noticed people have a preference. So which do you like more? While there are oher ways of saving besides these two, I think for this particular topic to just focus on one or the other. 

Personally, I vastly prefer manual saves. I feel like I have a bit more control of the progress of the game and know when I can stop. The problem comes when save states are too far from each other in certain games.

I'm not much a fan of auto saves due to a lot of games utilizing them poorly (In my opinion). I've noticed a lot of games with auto saves don't tell you when it saved so for me when I'm playing a game with auto saves I'm always wondering, has it saved here? Can I leave the game without back tracking too far? :S 

Anyway, what do you guys think?

I prefer both, sometimes auto saves really come in handy if you mess up xD But having the option to also manually save is great.

If it's games that ones have one or the other, Manually saving, if only because when I first play the game I'm always wondering "Did it save??" lmao Then I end up doing something else like another mission just to make sure it saved @_@

That's happened to me so many times XD



Manual saves by far, though of course it would depend on the game. I tend not to know where the autosave points are and sometimes am not sure if it autosaved, so I worry about turning off the system and losing my progress.

With manual saving, if I mess up, I can restart knowing where I left off.
Also, when I get bored, Ilike to do random things and mess around like breaking important things, selling good items and such, so auto saves would prevent me from doing that..

Auto saves are good for nonRPG games such as rhythm games and puzzle games so I don't have to manually save.

I prefer manual save.

I like being able to save at a point where I feel comfortable restarting at, or at a point where I can pick up at a later time.

I never feel confident with a game's autosave, since I hate it when a game saves at a point where I messed up. (Only exception being Dark Souls, since living with your errors is one of the main points of that game.)

... I'm the one who put password systems.

Granted, it really is manual systems that is the best, but I've been playing the original Metroid recently on VC and I prefer passwords there than saving and continuing. It took the risk out of it using manual.



Auto-saving for sure. I don't mind if manual saves exist alongside it, but I don't think I've ever felt I was losing anything not having to force myself to find a save point.

On the other hand, I absolutely hate it when I lose all progress for making a stupid mistake during a fight, just because the game decided it was good design to not give me a save point for two hours of playtime. Seriously, I hate being punished just because I played too long.

I definitely see that side of the argument as well. I've played plenty of older school RPGs where since it didn't have a save point for a long time I ended up facing an enemy that was too strong and losing my progress e.e



A combination of both. I manual save all the time, especially before important events. Open world games, especially Fallout and Skyrim, had me saving constantly. Sometimes I save, think, "wait, I'd better make sure," then save again. I absolutely love quick-save on PC, too, it's a major selling point.



It depends on the game of course. I like auto in action games. I don't want to have to think about saving in something like a shooter. In something more slow-paced like an adventure game, RPG, strategy, etc I might prefer manual saves. Basically in some games I want to be able to say, 'hang on I want to try doing that a different way' and reload my last save.

This isn't necessarily tied to the lack of auto saves. The design choice at fault here is the decision to force the player back to their last save when they 'game over.' Take a game like Xenoblade, which exclusively uses manual saves but simply returns you physically to the last fast-travel point you visited when you die, without causing you to lose any actual progress.
