Besides, if an indie game can't draw much attention on those platforms for one reason or another, wouldn't that be a bad thing? I mean if this is your excuse for Shovel Knight selling under 40k on XBO in 5 months, why should any other indie dev expect better? All you need is the release window gap. That's big. The situation is what it is. Nintendo pushed the game a lot and got it first on consoles. They were very supportive and offered two appealing platforms to Yacht Club. These are good things. They are the main reasons the game sold best on their platforms. There's nothing wrong with that. All of this means Yacht Club will be likely to support Nintendo platforms in the future... isn't that the whole point?? Capy's whole presentation was about how porting to as many consoles as possible is beneficial to indie developers. 18% of Shovel Knight's sales came from late ports. That's not negligible. Surely those extra ~150k sales more than covered the cost of porting. |
Dengle, this must be turned into console wars.
Even if this thread is supposed to be positive for all sides, it cannot be. The downplay must continue.
How is this surprising? It came out a just about a year ahead (10months) and has been discounted/on sale a number of times on Nintendo platforms while it's still consider "new" in the PS4/Xbox marketplace (think the biggest discount was 15%).
I myself bought it on the 3DS for $5 so I have to reason to buy it again on the PS4 ;()
.
wasn't this game a kickstarter on Nintendo platforms? I imagine that and the late release played the biggest part in the breakdown.

So, you really think that the sales distribution would be exactly the same if the Nintendo platforms were released after every other platform? |
Nintendo platforms would still be on top in sales no matter what

The situation is bad for XB1 in this case. I imagine 90% of the sales for Sony was on PS4 as well. Not bad for a late port. I imagine that 10 months of Nintendo or PC meant most Sony and MS people bought it on PC or 3DS.
Quite interesting that so many people compare third party numbers on Wii U with PS4/XONE and then complain, but when something like this happens it is 'not surprising'. Arguments like 'it was marketed on Nintendo platforms' or 'it suits more to the Nintendo audience' can also be used to explain low sales of for instance grey shooters on Nintendo platforms.

Honestly, I took that comment as trolling as it's an often used excuse as to why 3rd party games don't sell well on Nintendo platforms.

Why is that? (despite Steam being the top platform for this title )
It's not like there's a ton of examples of 2D platforming indie titles doing better on Nintendo platforms over everything else.

I was actually thinking that the low attach rate for XBO might hint that the PSN sales were more focused on Vita or PS3.

I count four different users in this thread using some variation of that argument. I wouldn't have bothered if it was only one comment.
Well, they've been in the market for longer, so its natural.
