Forums - Nintendo - So, were you hyped at the Wii U launch?

So, hyped?

I would not say "hyped", no, there was nothing at launch to really be "hyped" for. Just potential. NSMBU is a very good game, and it was fun. But it wasn't anything to get HYPED over, as NSMBWii had been (due to it being the first home console 2D Mario in 20 or so years, and the return of the Koopalings.)

I had really looked forward to Pikmin 3, which I had wanted for Wii for years, but when it FINALLY came out after getting delayed and delayed, it was a disappointment for some very stupid game design decisions that made absolutely no sense. Super Mario 3D World was a good game, very fun at times, but it wasn't the EPIC 3D Mario a lot of people were hoping for (and no I don't mean just another Galaxy game). Mario Kart 8 is pretty fantastic for racing, but their absolute laziness on the "Battle Mode" was disappointing. Similarly, Smash Bros. is a good game, more characters, good graphics, etc., but the absolute and honestly inexcusable lack of ANY kind of Adventure Mode, really killed my enthusiasm for it (as I don't play online very often).

Basically, Wii U is a very good system, and I even LIKE the controller. But it has had a LOT of missed opportunities. They have a chance to still "make it up", to an extent, IF, for example, the alleged Pikmin 4 FIXES the stupid things they fucked up on in P3. And IF, for example, Zelda lives up to even half of it's potential as a massive, NES original style open exploration adventure type game, as opposed to the progressively more linear direction the series took with later games.

The ONE area Wii U has really shined though, is the eShop. There are a ton of really good games available on it, with more coming all the time, between the VC and indie titles. I hope they find a way to carry over the games you've bought on eShop to the next system, just an upgraded version of what they have now, instead of the stupid "Transfer" you had to do with Wii (if you wanted, I chose not to).

When I saw Nintendo's presentation at E3 2012, I kind of was. They seemed like they were finally trying to kill their kiddie image and go back to the Nintendo from the early GC days and beyond. Plus, that Zelda U tech demo was awesome and what I was hoping for with Zelda U. What we're actually getting pretty much killed any interest I have the console. Either way, I got one at launch and have been pretty disappointed since, but that's just me. :/

I got it day 1 because I know games I like were going to come out on it, but hype.... I don't know. Anyways, that Jan 2013 Direct with Xenoblade X and Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem... My hype still hasn't came down.

I wasn't even aware that it had launched. Didn't frequent game sites back then and didn't see any advertising for it either.

This. I only found out about the Wii U when I got my 3DS, which was in March of 2014.

I WON A BET AGAINST AZUREN! WOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

:3

I was until I saw the E3 unveiling. I was like... wait... is this a new console? Or... is this a new controller?... wtf IS THIS?!?! I honestly didn't know what was going on. Then when I saw the price point I knew it was going to be in trouble.

I ended up getting one 6 months or so down the line, but by that point it was just the Nintendo fan in me and not the hyped, omg, this is going to be awesome version.

What? Nintendo was considered kiddie the moment Sega of America decided to run their adds. Take a look at the commercials if you weren't gaming back then. During the PS1/N64 years, nothing was considered more kiddie than the N64 and Nintendo. It only got worse with the Gamecube.

Nintendo has always been a "kids" thing, even during the NES years. The only difference was that there was no other competition marketing a console for young adults at the time so it was never an issue.

Personally, I don't give a damn. I liked my NES in the 80's and I like my Wii-U now, in my mid 30's. But, yeah, they've never NOT been kiddie.

No, Because no jrpg, no strategy game announced, and the gamepad and i still think its awfull even if i am gonna take the wiiU with X when i can buy the bundle !

I was extremely hyped, I'm a Nintendo diehard and it was the first home console I ever bought with my own cash. ZombiU, NSMBU and most of all, Pikmin 3 had me convinced good games would be there. Sadly, it hasn't really lived up to the hype in retail games; As has been said by others, SM3DW was good, but not the epic 3D Mario I expected after SMG, NSMBU was a good game by itself, but was entirely too stale. 3rd Party releases have almost entirely died off and the gamepad has not been utilised well in 99% of games.

Kills me as a Nintendo diehard, but the Wii U has not lived up to the Nintendo standard at all, it has been a 5/10 console, if that. I know this wasn't the question, but the 3DS on the other hand, has definitely lived up to the hype I had for it. It's been continuously incredible since holiday 2011 and has kept my interest. This came at the expense of the Wii U though, as 3DS stole many previously console games that could have otherwise gone to Wii U.

I was very hyped because of ZombiU.

And did it pay off?

For me it did. Wasn't as good as the Last Of Us in total but I thought the game play with game pad integration was better. Great game.

I was hyped because I couldn't wait to try the game pad. Haven't been disappointed so far.
