Forums - Gaming - So... Why everybody complains so much about Wii U's hard drive and not the PS4 one?

If you bought a console with its disk space capacity and you are going for digital and download updates and patches, each gamer should really be prepared that disk space would reach its limit and that is why WiiU got the hate more. You can get to its limit early on than Ps4. I've reached my limit on the WiiU once I've bought DK:TF and Pikmin 3. And for PS4 after 10 games I need further disk space. I don't need to whine on a forum but I know as a consumer I have gripes but since I wanted more disk space for both consoles I've bought an external HD for my WiiU and a 2TB for my Ps4. And then I don't have a problem. ;)

I get the hate but whining alone won't resolve the problem. If people think that disk space is an issue with that company and it is a big deal then boycott that product moving forward and go for a better option if possible.

Why I would care about the reason of why we need to install the entire game in the HDD? That's not my problem, that's Sony's problem. It's annoying, and that's just it.

Why? Sony's problem?

If it takes a level in the game you are playing 1min 30secs to load, would you still think its Sony's problem?

Why you should care why games need to be installed onto the HDD is cause that's the fastest way to run games as opposed to rewding from the disc. Especially when the games in question are as big as they are these days. All those high rrz textures that give you all that pretty graphics has to go somewhere you know?

I think I have not explained myself well : it's Sony's problem to find a solution that doesn't involve more problems.

OK. And what we are saying is that having the option to upgrade the HDD isn't a problem. Neither is some basic space management if that seems like too much trouble.

Would it have been nicer if the PS4 came with 1TB at launch? Absolutely, but if you practice zero space management even 1TB will get full eventually. Let's not forget that the consoles cost of entry could also have gone up of slapping in 1TB back in 2013.

Point is, its not a big deal. It will take you all of 5mins to change the internal PS4 HDD if you want to. And even less time to delete games you are done playing or not playing at the time.

I think the ps4 should get some hate too, since its the only current gen system who doesn't support external hdd's. I know ppl always say well u can just reinstall the games that are physical and redownload the digital ones, which is all true. But for example when u have a game like : final fantasy 14, which u have to redownload, then go through all the updates and installs to get back playing where u were at, because of that then its a very very huge deal, since that can take several hours to do.
I have 12 tb's for my xbox one, good for the rest of the gen, since I buy a ton of games each year and don't want the hassle putting every single game back onto the new hdd, each time u want to upgrade is not the right way to do things, sony needs to add external hdd support for the ppl who do buy a ton of games each year supporting their preferred system of choice.

This is an old debate but one that was definitely lopsided in favour of PS4/Xbone.

32gbs is far less than 500gb BUT relative to the size of games and install data on all three consoles it works out that the Wii U would last longer. Of course not so much now with all the DLC and digital content on Wii U.

Well that is different though, the NEW 3DS like totally alienated  current 3DS owners that was what the outrage was about. Why would you JUST come out with the 3DS then release the NEW 3DS and have a game/games for it that were not compatiable with the 3DS? And then after that people complained yet upgraded thinking they would get new games for the New 3DS but didn't. That was Nintendos fault for how they handled things.

With the NEW PS4 there was nothing different other than a bigger hard drive so of course there would be no uproar that's why it is differnt situation.

I understand that, but the New 3ds improves the quality of the 3d A LOT. Have you played on an og 3ds? I have one and it's terrible. I have played on my brother's New 3ds and just for the 3ds alone it would make sense to upgrade though I won't do it anytime soon.

You're right about the Ps4, now I see why there wasn't an outrage about that! totally different situation.

Probably buying a 1tb ps4 on november or december with the witcher 3.

Are you not understanding nothing? Your argument has been said dozens of times here, always pointless btw, the thing is you dont have to install your games on WiiU while you have to install your games on Ps4, making the one with less memory also less limited for physical games, wich is ironic.

I've had zero problems with both the PS4 and X1 (both 500GB, no more) Hard drives. Played loads of games.

I have over 250GB usable left on each machine.

I do use physical copies almost exclusively though.

Well, Sony could have put 1 or 2Tb HDD, but then a good chance of the console costing 450-500 would existe... and even though for us it isn't really a problem it would probably have impacted PS4 sales a lot, a lot more than insatisfaction with 500Gb may have caused... but yes sony could always had launched with 1Tb and 2Tb options.

No, it isn't pointless. Because comparing physical with physical the PS4 has enough space to install 8-15 AAA games, plus all the patches. Then once the HDD is full one may opt to delete some installation (for physical discs) caches without many issue, since they get reinstalled in less than a minute thanks to Play GO.

But the larger HDD also allows the PS4 (as it is) to have the same games downloaded digitally, which isn't possible in the Wii U (as it is). All of this granting a much faster disc access from the games. Which translates in better texture streaming, causing less pop-ins and the likes.

In other words the PS4 architecture for mass storage is the best of the three (because installation times on XB1 can be awful). It would have been nearly perfect if Sony opted for an automatic cancellation of the less used disc caches, configurable by the users, when more free HDD space is needed (like in a virtual memory system). Instead mark Cerny & C. bizarrely rejected that mechanism while, with not much surprise, Apple adopted a similar one for the Apple TV. With the difference that the Apple TV is digital only. And no, the Apple TV games and apps are NOT limited to 200MB. They can actually be even terabytes of data. The 200MB is the maximum size fo rthe core app, the one launching the game and downloding the missing parts. Then iOS deletes what is old when needed.

But sure, both the Wii U and XB1 allows to install games in a external HDD. Currently limited to 2TB on Wii U. But that's not the standard configuration for the Wii U, and so the games must be tuned to run from the optical disc. Which could well be another reason why many AAA games aren't coming to Wii U, so excuse us if there is a large difference.
