Mostly agree with him

Disagree on the Nintendo = toy company though. They really don't do that much in the way of toys, the only ones they do are usually just merchandise for the game franchises anyways. To me Nintendo are first and foremost a gaming company, just like EA, Sega, Activision etc.

It's actually pretty true. Maybe not necessarily in terms of technicality, but certainly in perception (and we all know perception is reality). Xbox and PS are seen as gaming consoles, where as Nintendo systems are largely looked at as being for children. And if it's considered to be a child's play thing then naturally people see it as a toy more than anything else. That's aside from the fact that any pure game console could easily be considered a toy anyway. Sony and MS are making all around entertainment systems so they kinda fall out of that category, but Nintendo still really just does games.

Edit: Also, that's some quite selective quoting OP

I'm pretty sure my WiiU does more than play games. Last home console from Ninty that could only play games was the Gamecube so next time do some research.

You seem to be frozen in time, time to unfreeze and see Sony at the top of the console market.

just in hardware, nintendo sold more of their own software than sony or m$, with the lowest selling console

Not even in hardware if you rightly include handheld consoles

I don't think it's particularly radical to say that you can't count a company out that's been involved in the industry in some form or another since its infancy, possesses some of the most iconic franchises in gaming, has shown no drop in quality in their first party games, and still has plenty of money to mess around with for years to come.

Doesn't mean they WILL climb back to the top, but why would anyone simply write them off?

I agree with Bach that they are a toy company, basically they make money off little plastic figurines, and make games predominantly aimed at young audience.
That's why they are not in competition with Sony or Microsoft, their competitors are actually LEGO, Disney and Mattel.

As for not discounting them, I think they are done with home consoles, there is no way they can make a comeback, their user base has dwindled close to insignificance. I certainly hope they go away, they have nothing to offer anymore.

Nintendo's heritage is as a toy company, so that's really not a slight (Ultra Hand, Love Tester, heck the NES was distributed in the US initially by Mattel ... a toy company, etc. these are toys). Their game philosophy in a lot of ways has more in common with the toy industry than the electronics or computer industry. They view the game industry through the prisim of being a toy company, Sony sees it through the prisim of being an electronics company, Microsoft through a computer software company.

I am by no means a Nintendo fan, in spite of owning a console or handheld of theirs here and there, but I recognise the crucial role thay play in the gaming landscape. We would all lose if Nintendo disappeared.

May the NX find success! (But not any more than the PS4 has :p)

How so, exactly?

Their originality, their quirkness, the polish of their games, their approach to what makes a game fun and the different perspectives they integrate in the games they make, the counterbalance to Sony's and Microsoft's seriousness and heavyhandedness at times.

I agree with Nintendo being more of a toy company, and I'd like to keep them that way.

Heck, they still sell playing cards and karuta. That should be their backup plan: making karuta popular in the west and associate it with Nintendo!

Okay, karuta requires a grasp of the Japanese language...
