Forums - Gaming - (Japan is winning) Western games or Japanese games, which one do you prefer?

Which approach do you prefer?

Western videogames 73 19.68%

Japanese videogames 185 49.87%

Both equal 88 23.72%

Some Japanese games 18 4.85%

Some Western games 7 1.89%

Total:371

I was reading some comments on the Rate Sony's TGS conference thread I made about how the games presented there were not appealing to some of you and I was thinking about how many of the people here in the forums go for Western games first or exclusively when it comes to gaming. I know there are a lot of fans of Japanese gamers in here though.

I decided to create this thread and sort of let you guys comment on what approach to gaming you like the best, either games made in West or Japanese games. Of course, you may like both.

I decided I should poll this motherfucker so poll's coming.

Which one do you prefer, Western games, Japanese games, or both? And why do you prefer that approach to art style, gameplay and storytelling?

Both offer something the other doesn't. So, i'll take both since only restrictions are self imposed.

Japan is games.

EDIT: Btw, this is one of our frequent thread topics.

some made the same thread a few weeks ago

I think I even made this same thread some years ago.

I'm pretty much split, though I generally like each for different reasons. I often like how varied Japanese games are in terms of characters, for instance, but I think many of them suffer from poor or unnecessarily convoluted storytelling. On the other hand, many western games have bland characters but well-conceived plots.

In terms of game-play, I think western games do great work with FPS and open-world titles but Japanese games tend to offer a lot of different play styles. Japanese developers seem to suffer the most when they try to mimic western games.

I would hate to lose either one.

Japanese, but really just because they generally make better feeling games. Like, mechanic wise. It feels better to move around in japanese games than western ones. Very few western devs understand game feel and kinesthetics. That's why I'm so up Sucker Punch's ass. They get it. Same with the Dying Light guys.

I love both, but western games are a little bit better overall in terms of gameplay.

Also a good % of japanese games are handheld so they are technically inferior.
I still love handheld games though, portability is great, plus it's comfy as fuck to play 3DS games on your bed lol

I can't choose. My mood switches from time to time, and I prefer the cultural collision than having to be stuck with just one of the two. I'd say japanese gaming edges western, for me,  for the sole reason that the most mindblowing games (not always in a good sense) I've played were made in Japan, and that's something always worth mentioning.
