I think it's coming out in 2017 at the earliest, regardless of the lineup.

2017 earliest!? 2017 is latest when NX could be launched.

If they have a strong showing of software, and are willing to talk about projects that are still years out like the other companies are doing, I think they could easily find their space (just as the Wii U could have if there weren't so many freaking game droughts). They just need to get the right exclusives, and have the right first party titles at launch. And if they got something that is new and catches the consumers eye, all the more reason to get one when we're in the middle of a gen.

Getting Dragon Quest XI doesn't seem like (to consumers) that big of a deal. The series doesn't sell. Besides, how is releasing a game along side a system people have any different than waiting a year? If people have a PS4, they aren't going to rush out to get a NX because of Dragon Quest XI, lol. Complete non issue.

Waiting an extra year could mean all the difference when companies have been known to exchange parts for better ones before mass production even within a year of release (the XBone did). Waiting another year for parts to become cheaper and have better hardware in the system (especially when bigger titles are still being released for the Wii U) is certainly not a terrible idea.

If it's launching in 2017, then it's specs better be able to compete with the PS5 (FIVE, not PS4) and XBox 2 (or whatever they call it). Otherwise ... it's just going to be a niche device that sells maybe even less than the Wii U. Imagine the GameCube launching in 2005 instead of 2001. Or the N64 launching in 2000 instead of 1996, even the Saturn would have beat it.

Also, c'mon really, Dragon Quest isn't a big deal? In Japan it most certainly is. DQXI + Zelda + Mario in the launch window most certainly would sell systems.

The Wii U is already in first place in Japan. It needs to attract the rest of the world.

"first place" by default, PS4 is going to easily overtake it once all those Japanese games, like Dragon Quest XI start showing up. And a "me too PS4" launching in 2017 attracts North America and Europe how exactly?

I never thought it was coming out in 2016. It was insane to think so.

First, we dont even know what it is, second, its not coming out before fall 2017. Nintendo needs time to develop software for it.
Also, because Nintendo seems to like showing their next system two E3's in a row before launching.

New Mario 3D game will be certanly be ready for next year, probably Retros game too, Next Level game too...recently we are geting mainly spinofs and smaller games, games that dont requre big budgets and time, all that points that Nintendo is preparing games for NX.

Showing system one year or more before launching today is totally inefficient, not to mention that WiiU/3DS sales would completely stopped. Best way Nintendo could do is show new system at E3 or few months earlier and launch it in holiday season, similar like XboxOne and PS4.

I just don't see nintendo unveiling and releasing the nx in the same year. No way. No one has done that. Especially nintendo.nx 2017. Guarantee it.

I still think that the NX is coming out in 2016. Also I think that PIkmin 4 will be a launch title for the NX rather than a WII U title.

Actual much bigger chances are that is Wii U title or cross platform than only NX title.

Yeah maybe if Wii U and even 3DS weren't selling like cow dung, Nintendo could show the NX, but they can't because of such poor sales by the existing Nintendo platforms right now.

My opinion: NX will release in late 2016. There is absolutely no reason to talk about a console 2.5 years before release. The things listed in the OP are not indications for a later NX launch at all.

Why was Zelda shown last year but not this year? Because it's being ported to NX.
Why was Pikmin not shown despite being "almost done"? Because it's either a last hurrah for Wii U or cross platform.
Shin Megami X Fire Emblem was supposed to launch way earlier but the developers struggled with the concept of the game. That does not point to a 2017 NX launch. It just means they struggled to get the game out faster.
Why didn't we see Retro's new game after 3 years? Because Nintendo approached them to redo it for NX.

In late 2016 the Wii U will be 4 years old. That's exactly how long the first Xbox was on the market when the Xbox360 reelased. The DS released 4 years after the GBA, too. This is not "pulling a SEGA" or "alienating the fanbase", otherwise the Xbox360 would have bombed hard and the DS wouldn't have become the best selling handheld of all time.

Totally agree, not to mention that Nintendo will probably have some hevi hitters for NX launch like new 3D Mario and Retro game.

By having more games ready if the dev kits are out. Launch linup is far more inportant than Dragon Quest XI on a worldwide scale. We may be able to agree on this.

Yes, but even if Wii U (espacily Wii U) and 3DS sales are not great they are still selling, and software is selling pretty good (also Nintendo finished 2014. in pretty good profit and first Q1 of this year), but in case they announce new system at least one year earlier before launch, all those sales would stop.
