Forums - Sony - PS4 Price drop in all of East Asia

I'm genuinely surprised. Sony didn't need to do this yet. Everyone is looking at this as good news, but I don't think it is. You don't hit nitro when you're in first place unless 2nd place is on your tail.

Like obviously, it's good for the consumer, but clearly Sony's analysts are seeing something a lot of us, including me, aren't seeing that necessitates a price drop this soon. It'll be worrying if it comes to the west.

What do you think it could potentially be? Problems inside Sony? Perhaps, however unlikely, the NX is a factor? I really don't see what would cause this. It's not like it's selling bad in Asia

You're reading too much into it.

In Asia the previous RRP was inflated too much and it was cheaper to buy imported console from US or other region. This pricing just brings it in line with grey market prices.

I think that Sony is afraid that it'll plateau earlier than they expected. I don't think they're worried about the competition, because I genuinely don't think they care about competitng for first place, just making a profit.

It's definitely not a juggernaut there, though. I think that a price drop in the west would be way more telling. But honestly, I don't know. It's doing so well everywhere else. It's sales have been meteoric, so there's no reason to make less profit on every system sold unless they expect their profits to dip significantly enough without one, which only comes from a drop in sales.

Hope I am. Like I said, a drop in the West would be way more telling.

We'll see what the future holds

Ehh? the CUH1200 model can afford this price because the original model made 20$ profit of each 400$ PS4. Sony never sold a console before with a profit from the console itself, this is abnormal for PlayStation. Thats why it drops in price.

The PS4 is sucessfull in the west but not in the east, this is why its a smart move to take marketshare from mobile and not xbox which isnt sucessfull in asia in the first place.

They did this exact same thing during the PS2 days. Actually, by the same point in the PS2's life, it had gotten a 100$ price cut in the US. And this will come to the west. Sony's forecast for Playstation Operating Income from july 30th confirmed it even then. It will be announced before the holiday.

I'm not saying they can't afford the price drop. I'm saying they shouldn't need on yet. People have been tripping over each other to buy a PS4 at $400. No one relevant yet will only buy a PS4 after it drops in price, so a price drop this soon is really weird.

I don't think this is taking any market share from mobile over there. The attempt to get people away from that platform over there is frankly futile for everyone.

Not for nothing, but weren't the PS2's sales more long term rather than meteoric, like the PS4's? The PS4 isn't selling like the PS2 right now, it's selling like the Wii. The PS2 sold well because it sold well consistantly over a long time. I was under the impression that the PS4 is currently selling faster than the PS2 was at the same time. Is that incorrect? Not debating, just getting my facts straight.
