KS and IG are "investing". You're donating money and getting something in return. Very low donations, usually it's just a sticker, or a button, or some minor kind of prize. Bigger donations/investments give you bigger things. And MOST KS campaigns I've seen, usually around the $15-$30 mark, you are already essentially pre-purchasing/pre-ordering a copy of the game when it is completed. BIGGER donations usually garner people some awesome prizes, or even their name in the game credits, or becoming a NPC character in the game, etc. etc. etc. I've seen many KS people offer many different things.
And quite frankly, no offense, people saying things like "don't be a beggar", is both offensive and way off base. No one in a fundraiser is BEGGING. You don't have to donate/invest if you don't want to. If enough people think the thing (be it a book, movie, album, game, whatever) is a GOOD idea, and something that they want to see exist, so they themselves can enjoy it, then that fundraiser will succeed, by virtue of people "investing" in it. There is nothing at all wrong with that, and I fail to see the problem some people seem to have with it.
If anything, Kickstarter has been a revelation for creators, because they now have an option they didn't have before: to stay "indie" and not rely on the funding/backing of bigger corporate entities, who often can and will excert creative control and restrictions on them, in liu of funding their work. With crowdfunding, people who WANT the art/product you are offering, can support you and the thing they want directly, and what's more, feel like a part of making something happen, making something cool that you personally WANT to exist so you can play it/see it/listen to it/etc., that's pretty awesome, quite frankly.
I personally have funded, thus far, a movie, an album, and multiple games. I'm proud of that, and even more proud that all of those succeeded, and either already are, or will be actual things that I want to exist, that I can enjoy. It if wasn't for KS, those things I helped fund might not exist. So personally, I'm very glad that things like KS and IndieGoGo exist. They're a boon in a time when the music industry, the movie industry, the games industry, you name it....honestly all kind of suck. It's because of Kickstarter that movies like the AVGN Movie and Kung Fury got made. Or the reason that games like Mighty No. 9, or Bloodstained, or Shovel Knight, or Adventures of Pip, etc. exist. I'll take that over most of the crap that Hollywood and the "AAA" games industry shit out these days.
