I'm using Unity game engine for the game setup and Visual Studio for the coding. Images can be made in any image editting software and 3D models can be made in any 3D software, but since all I need for this game are very basic plain shapes (balls, cubes, etc), I'm using Unity to make the 3D objects too. I have used Conitec's 3D Gamestudio before, and I also learnt a bit of XNA Game studio in the past, and what I'll tell you is that if you seriously want to make games, you'll have to learn the very basics of all (or most of) the segments involved, and then focus on one or two areas. Then you'll need a team to handle the other areas that you aren't specializing in.
And if you want to learn programming, don't start from game programming. Learn programming from a broader sense first
