Forums - Sony - What aspects of the PlayStation Ecosystem would you change or add?

Bigger controller

Around the Network

I like everything you said. In my opinion, Sony should build all of their products around the PlayStation Ecosystem. Every device should run some form of the PlayStation OS, and if they want to run propritory memory, it should work across all of their devices as well.

Some of my thoughts;

Hardware:

PlayStation 4

The PS4 is basically perfect from a APU stand point at this time. In the next revision (2016) I would add 4GB of RAM (for system use only) a total of 12GB GDDR5, 2 USB Ports to the Rear, Memory Card Slots (SD and PS Vita) Front, and AC Wifi. I would ship every PS4 with a PlayStation Vue remote for simpler use of all media outside of games, this should only cost Sony a few dollars per unit, which they should eat in order to gain ground in the TV business. The 2016 model should come with a 2TB SSHD as well. That should keep PS4 up to date, or ahead of everything else on the market.

PlayStation Vita/ PlayStation Mobile

Similar to what you stated, Vita or the next Sony mobile device needs to come in multiple forms. I would merge Sony Mobile Communications with Sony Computer Entertainment, and rebrand all of the Xperia Products under PlayStation and bring them onto the PlayStation OS. Then I would bring out a PlayStation Phone, but mine would retain the Vita's form factor, and add L1/L3 and R1/R3. I would also bring out a 4G and Wifi only profuct similar to Nvidias Sheild. The combination of Slab devices, and Physical input devices would make the PlayStation Mobile platform unique in the mobile industry, and something only Microsoft and Nintendo could mimic thanks to their gaming libraries. This type of move would leave a massive hole in Google and Apples product lines and ecosystems.

PlayStation TV

PlayStation TV would continue to run on the same chip set as the PlayStation Mobile Products, and continue to be priced in the $100 - $200 price range. I would again ship every one of these units with a PS Vue controller to enhance its media capabilities, and be a true replacement for cable/satilite box. I would start shipping the unit with the DS4 to better promote the PS4 Remote Play features. The system would still run on Sony's PS Mobile Memory cards for enhanced security, and unity across Sony products company wide.

PlayStation 3

Time to put it out to pasture. It is not built on x86/ARM, and therefore it is a thron in the side of the One Sony/PlayStation Ecosystem. The unit is going to be 10 years old next year, and it has run its course.

OS/PlayStation Network

As mentioned above, I think Sony needs to go to a single unified OS across all of its products, including TV's, Camera's, Blu-ray Players, Phones, and PlayStation Computing Systems. They need to bring in the big business apps, banking, shopping, fitness, e-readers, Word Processors, Spread Sheets, Power Point, Home Secruity, Home Automation, etc. allowing the PlayStation/Sony Ecosystem to be your one stop shop. Thus, eleminate the need for a Smartphone, a tablet, a handheld, a PC, a Console, and any other set top box or USB stick. Everything can be accoplished through your PlayStation 4, PlayStation Mobile device, and PlayStation TV in additional rooms.

PlayStation 4

PlayStation 4 should be the heart of this OS and Ecosystem. They should allow PS4 external storage full support, and allow PS4 to be the hub for all other devices. Allow uploading/downloading/streaming of Video, Pictures, Music, etc. to and from the PS4 on any Sony device. PS4 should be the home of all of your downloaded games, movies, and music from PlayStation Store, and again, allow streaming, and transfering to any of your Sony devices.

PlayStation Mobile/PlayStation Vita

The mobile PlayStation products should gain apps from Sony's unified app store for PS4, PSM, and PSTV. The device would completly eliminated the need for a smartphone, while also allowing developers to take advantage of other apps within the PlayStation ecosystem to enhance the gaming experience. Being a Sony product, these devices would be able to communicate with PS4 and PlayStation Network anytime and anyplace. This would make the PS Mobile line the ultimate in gaming, communication, and business.

PlayStation TV

Again, this would be tied into the Sony/PlayStation ecosystem. It would have all of the apps built for PlayStation, allowing it to access any and all content from PSN and PS4. With mouse and keyboard support, DS4 support, and the PS Vue controller in every box, this device could handle all of the needs of a cable/satilite box, a PC, a Set top box, and a smartphone, while also having access to all PSP, PS Vita, PS1, PS2, PS3, and PS4 games via native support, PS Now, and PS4 Remote Play.

Games

By broadening the appeal of the PlayStation ecosystem and hardware to many more markets, the userbase would grow exponentially. This would put Sony and 3rd parties in a much better position, and make it nearly impossible for game devs, and app/software developers alike to not think about putting their work on PlayStation.

By building a brand and ecosystem around premium hardware and content, PlayStation would be the ultimate destination for AAA development, and bring back the days of exclusive content developed directly for one system, bringing the best experience possible at any given time.

All PlayStation games, home and portable would be playable on any other PlayStation device via remote play or PS Now. Thanks to the unified OS and cross platform dev enviornment, the majority of PlayStation games would be made available across PS4/PSM/PSTV. This would bring enhanced value to cross buy, and cross save functions. Games that are not capable of running nativly on PSM or PSTV would have companion apps so you can continue to make progress in some fashion no matter where you are, what device you have, or what kind of network connection you have.

Project Morpheus/New Experiences/Business

Project Morpheus would be integrated into the Sony ecosystem across all PS devices. It would generate content from all forms of entertainemnet, productivity, business, and imagination. PS Mobile devices would connect to Project Morpheus for a smaller scale gaming experience, or to hope into your virtual office. The combonation of PS4 and Project Morpheus would become the future of business computing. No more feeling cramped in your cubicle, with PS4 and morpheus your office would be as large of as small as you want it. You can have your project on one 120in screen to your left, and a model or simulation on another 120in 3D screen on your right. You can work in a virtual office, in a virtual cofee shop, or beach, on the moon, whatever tickles your fancy.

Thanks to the uniform hardware, this would be the ultimate device and setup for any business. No worry about programs running on older PC models or odd PC configs. Updating software across your business would become a walk in the park.

BC with PS2 and PS1 games

Sony has created an amazing ecosystem between its products, capable of passing save files from system to system, remote playing some systems with others, and all of them reaping benefits from PS+. But it's not perfect. What aspects of the PlayStation Ecosystem would you change or add?

Next, I would add functions to each system:

The PlayStation 4 would be the ability to Remote Play the PS3 or the PSTV. This would make it possible to play you PS3 on your PS4, from one room to another, and would allow you to, in some way, play PS3 games on your PS4 if you own them already. This would also extend to the PSTV, allowing PS4 users to remote play Vita games and PS1 classics. Another function that would be added to the PS4 would be the ability to create folders and organize their media bar.

The PlayStation 3, as mentioned earlier, would get cross-game chat (supported only on "New PS3s"). This would allow PS3 users to communicate with PS4 users more often, bringing the two communities together. Another function would be the ability to Remote Play the PS4 or the PSTV onto the PS3. This would allow users to play their PS4 or PSTV from one room into another. A big change would be the full support of the Dualshock 4 for PS3, and they would also support Spotify.

The PlayStation Vita would gain the ability to remote play the PS3, allowing users access to both the PS3 and PS4 on their Vitas. The Vita would also gain access to PlayStation Vue, meaning TV on the go, and they would also get a Spotify app. Another big upgrade is the advent of a new YouTube app.

The PlayStation TV would get it's biggest (and most desparate) upgrade with the addition of Netflix, Vudu, YouTube, and Amazon Video. The upgrade would make the PSTV a viable contender for a Roku replacement. In addition the PSTV would gain the ability to remote player the PS3, completing the "Ecosystem" of the PlayStation Network.

And finally, we come to the services:

PlayStation Now would be one of the biggest aspects of the PlayStation Network at this point. The biggest change would be the ability to purchase games for good. Now, it costs money to maintain these servers, so it can't simply be a one time purchase forever. However, it can be if they are at least a PS+ member. PS+ members would become capable of purchasing games permanently on Now, and any games they already own DIGITALLY for the PS3 will also be added to their "owned" library.

PlayStation Vue needs a lot of work. First of all, it needs to be extended to at least the capital cities of every state and it needs to begin spreading out from those cities (large states like California and Texas would need two or three cities to spread out from in order to cover the states in a sufficient amount of time). Alá carte needs to be better supported, namely with Viacom channels. Having Viacom as a partner would allow those who don't live in major cities to still enjoy most of what they'll probably want to watch. The pricing for the bundles needs to reflect their PS+ status in a way that it becomes cheaper to become a PS+ member and get Vue than to simply have Vue. This would drive owners of other system to have a PS+ account as well, increasing the population of the "PlayStation Nation's" paid subscribers. Vue should also be supported on Vita and TV, allowing users to place PSTVs around the house for cable.

Certain Streaming Services should be available on all PlayStation platforms, namely: Spotify, Netflix, Hulu, Vudu, Amazon, YouTube, Crunchyroll, and Crackle. These services being available on all PlayStation systems would mean that no matter which one you're using, you'll have the ability to watch/listen to what you want.

With all of these changes, I believe the competition would be mostly out of luck. I understand that releasing so many new versions of the systems would be expensive, and that procuring Data support for a theoretical PlayStation Phone would be difficult. Getting Viacom on board and releasing Vue subscriptions on so many cities would also be quite a task. The biggest thing is the sudden support of the Vita again, as well as the use of so many old and new IPs in exclusives. This isn't a thread about what is likely to hapen, it's what you would change.

I like all of this stuff. It is nice to see someone looking at the other aspects of the PlayStation business. If we want to continue to have high quality games like we have on PS4 and XBO, we have to look at these aspects of the business as well. People need to start looking at Consoles and Handhelds as the ultimate form of the convergence devices, and not as pure gaming toys.

Not only are these devices better equiped to be your one devices to rule them all, the business model is also much better for the consumer. Consoles and Handhelds are sold at break even or a loss, instead of the $800 - $1000 dollars smartphone manufactures are charging for $200 - $300 dollar devices. They also offer huge saving via the subscription services. With PS+ and XBL consumers can get the same content for $100's of dollars less compared to competeing platforms.

The only thing consoles make harder is conducting illegal activity/ stealing. If you are stealing content or conducting illegal activities, then the console and handhelds might not be for you.

I would have them add a butt load of servers so their entire system doesn't go down all the time. That was my only real complaint when I owned one, aside from running out of cloud storage for saves. After awhile, I just couldn't justify paying for an online service that goes down constantly.

Lol... constantly. Pretty sure you never had a PS4 based on this post and your overall post history.

@OP I could give a fuck less about AC. Wireless N is more than anyone not on gigabit needs... the real NIC changes should be adding a 5ghz antennae and supporting dual connections in order to prevent packet loss and get the slightly lower latency of 5ghz. Also, you will NEVER be able to buy PS Now games unless you require the $15 sub to access them. It makes zero financial sense and also forces support indefinitely.

Pretty sure you can check my PSN account if you don't believe me and yes, constantly. I don't know if it was where I am located but it went down all the time. I know it wasn't my internet because I'm paying through the ass for it and it's never an issue with any other console/computer in my house.

Just a few things:

PS4
-external HDD support
-better organization of the apps
-more customization options and background music

Ps3
-update the web browser
-some kind of optional memory expansion (it's kinda cumbersome at times)

Vita
-change the shape of the tiles and maybe even add some "widgets"

That's about it. My biggest gripe with the PlayStation brand as a whole is that they try so hard to be cool and futuristic that they come off as cold, lifeless and (don't know if it's the right word)/desolate. Whereas the PS1 felt "warm", the ps2 started this trend. It's a game console. Yes, it's a more mature console but make it look fun! Stop harshing my mellow.

Oh, give me some kind of L2, L3, R2, R3 add on for Vita! The touch screen "buttons" suck balls when I use it for remote play. Some games are unplayable (ie Arkham Knight)!!  Heck, just let me connect a controller like the PSP could do and I'd be happy.
