Forums - Gaming - The witcher 3 development costs

I searched and didn't find nothing about it, but since the news has 3 days already, i apologize if repeated.

http://www.pcgamer.com/the-witcher-3-wild-hunt-cost-81-million-to-make/

Numbers:
- Total cost was USD 81 Millions
- The cost includes marketing (40 "fine-tuned" campaigns in "every key market" as well as a simultaneous global campaign)
- Main Team formed by 240 people from 18 nationalities
- 1500 people were involved in the development and launch
- 15 different languages (7 of them fully dubbed)

Net profit: $63 Million (with 6 million copys sold)

Comparisons:
 - GTA V (2013) = More than $260 M
- Star wars: the old Republic MMO (2012) = $200 M

Great news. Waiting for a complete edition myself, and that will no doubt bring in some more millions as well. Perhaps it will even make Cyberpunk 2077 more ambitious.

Nice knowing the total cost. Usually we only get the development cost.

Good to know that they received profit so quickly... And quite an amount. With more to come through legs and dlc. Deserved imo. Still too early to call a goty but this game will be in the conversation.

Thanks for posting those numbers. Good numbers that will increase with the costs of the DLCs and the future sales.

Now I can't help but wonder how many of those $81 mil. went to the actual development of the game, and also how much of those $61 mil. in profit went to CD Projekt and how much to Bandai Namco.

Please excuse my bad English.

Good to know that they've had a profit. I still need to buy my copy. Maybe next month if I finish some of my backlog of games.

Goes to show the kind of waste and inefficiency that's often involved in these big projects. Get Poland on the job and they'll show you how it's done.

This is an interesting article about TW3 development budget
http://www.usgamer.net/articles/how-much-did-the-witcher-3-cost

Estimated at about $32 million production cost, a bit cheaper than most AAA titles yet
we have the annual Game Developer Salary Survey over at Gamasutra. For the U.S. in 2013, game developers made an average of $83,060, while Canadian devs made $71,445. Develop ran its own UK salary survey, coming up with an average salary of £29,358 ($46,591 at the time). Polski GameDev offered up its own infographic showing local salaries broken down job type. The average salary overall? 4,458 zł per month ($1,446 per month at the time). Total annual average salary? $17,352.

A lot easier to make a profit in Poland if the wages are only 25% of that of a NA studio.

Btw comparing it with the most expensive video game to data GTA5 is not the best way to go. Apparently TW3 cost a bit more than Crisis 3 and Watch dogs according to the above article.

Damn gta v was a beast to make i wonder how much would go into gta 6

And don't forget, there were at one time cross-gen versions of the game - so there's some cost and productivity lost on that as well.

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016
