Forums - Sony - Frostbite Dev: The PS3 CELL Retarded The Industry Significantly

After the mess the Frostbite was on PS4/Xbone/PC I have to disagree... they didn't know what they are talking about

Quite an analysis here...

OP: Nobody can really argue that the Cell was over complicated for nothing. Even Sony dropped it after all.
I would say that it did not help the industry at least and for some dev. studio it was effectively a pain in the ass (or add. costs)

As a special education teacher I have to say that this guy used the word correctly where as 99% of people use it incorrectly. It means to slow down or be slow.

P.S. I get greatlly disturbed by people calling other people that, but his use of the word about a computer chip and idea are correct.

It really did setback the industry when you think about it ...

Delays and etc became more frequent because of it and are people here really going to argue against senior programmers and engineers who know better than everyone else when it comes to the technical side of game development ?

We can't say in anything that resembles a definitive way that delays somehow became more accepted and normal, or really any more regular in the last generation, nor can we even begin to say it was exclusively the fault of the PS3. It isn't as if delays are new either. If anything, some devs are getting more comfortable simply delaying specific versions of games and releasing other versions as they're completed. The industry is in an endless transitionary phase as people try to figure out newer and better ways to get content to the people that desire it faster and more efficiently. Considering all the factors at play, blaming one console seems incredibly silly.

And being on the technical side doesn't keep people from saying stupid and blatantly wrong things. If he didn't like working on the PS3, whatever, but saying it held back the entire industry is something that can't be justified and thus falls into the category of stupid statements.

So, since the PS3 eventually beat the 360 in the end, that means the 360 got beat by a retard? 😕

What does that even mean?

Anyway I think Sony paid the biggest price for using the cell thingy majiggy

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/retard

It's actually a perfectly normal way to describe it... just that we kinda have a stigma on the word now in the very much Non PC term that it is used to describe a person who is mentally challenged.

OT I disagree, Sony used the ps3 as a tester for being the most powerful piece of hardware in the console market, given that they refined it into the ps4 now I think it was a good thing they went with some crazy power cpu last gen. (made for some shit ports, but some great looking games which used the power well)

Oh I see

It makes sense now. I was thinking about the other use of the word

And now there are less delays, right? And we've advanced so much since then gaming wise, right?

Seriously it's not like the PS3 was the lead platform last gen. How on earth did the Cell "retard" the industry? Most people just developed for 360 and ported over. Was the Cell a PITA? Yes, but how could it slow the entire industry?

Well I think he's saying is the Cell was a burden on devlopers that worked on PS3. Frankly, I agree. Sony should have used a processor with an arcitecture developers are more familiar with. A more standard arcitecture would have have been better for PS3 and has been great for PS4.

The PS3 had an amazing processor but no significant impact on performance or graphics compared to the inferior Xbox 360 processor, which apparently had the superior GPU.

When he said it got what it deserved. He probably meant he's glad it was a failure for Sony (it might be the primary reason Sony lost money on PS3) and encouraged them to use a standard arcitecture in their next platform.

Also, it should be noted a reason we have BC on X1 is because the inferior 360 CPU was relatively easy to emulate. Emulating the Cell would be more difficult.
