Forums - Nintendo - Does Nintendo often announce controversial games but they end up really good?

lol OP... you mean SONY right?

Heavy Rain, Beyond, Until Dawn, MAG, SOCOM4, Planetside, Dust514, Eye of Judgement, Bloodborne, Tokyo Jungle , Warhawk, Starhawk, Sorcery, Entwined, Tearaway

Most of these games had very little to do with Sony... Dust514 was entirely developed by CCP games I believe.

Otherwise, I don't recall many of these games being ripped on; I myself was excited for quite a few of these in fact though, in the case of Dust514, I was very much let down. We're talking about games that people initially dislike but are eventually swayed.

Most of those? Only one is not published by Sony, that's Dust 514. The rest all were published by Sony.

Also let's not forget MotorStorm and Wipeout were risky, and Gran Turismo and God Of War were huge risks when they were made. Of course now they aren't risks anymore, but at the time of their release there was nothing like them in the market.

Ok I won't argue that, I was mostly thinking of in-house projects as opposed to published games but I suppose that distinction would rule out some of Nintendo's longshots that I mentioned earlier heh. Many of those games were well underwell before they were picked up by Sony, but I won't fault Sony for having an eye for hidden gems.

Yeah, there's definitely been some chance takers published by Sony, and I'm glad for it as a few of them are among my favorite titles. I'm still holding out hope that Dust514 is better incorporated into the EVE universe and receives a gen 8 release as well... While it never grew huge (I think maybe half a million players tops), that EVE Online universe has likely been the most stable of all MMO's, and they never stop working on it.

I've played the Planetside franchise on and off for longer than most as well.

People just like to be critcal for everything. The hate FF gets is unjustified in any way... now, the Zelda delay can be totally hated, and it's understandable.

3D World was ok, btw.

Bet with bluedawgs: I say Switch will outsell PS4 in 2018, he says PS4 will outsell Switch. He's now permabanned, but the bet will remain in my sig.

Yeah, it's very common. I remember when Wind Waker was announced, with the change of art style, it was a big shock for some fans. It turned out to be a great Zelda and is widely recognised as a fantastic game. Nintendo has taken a lot of risks in the past, and I expect them to do this. Sometimes it works, and sometimes don't, but it's in its DNA.

The controverse with Federation Force is that it is a game nobody asked for, at least not before a real one. This is not the same case as Super Mario 3D World. 3D World was still a mainline entry in the 3D Mario universe, while Federation Force is a multiplayer mission based game with a different cast.

What planet were you on? It was the same exact case. Controversy behind 3D World is that everyone wanted a SMG3 or a successor single player Mario game. 3D was also called lazy, an upscaled 3DS game.

Grand Turismo I agree, but there weren't Devil May Cry in the market? Considering it was a PS2 era, most aren't a risk. Do not group Grand Turismo with those kind of 'kinda innovation.' MotorStorm variant's predecessor doesn't come to mind at the moment, but Wipeout already had F-Zero to bank on.

For Nintendo, Windwaker comes to mind.

I don't think they've released any controversial games recently other than Splatoon. So no, they just don't release enough controversial games for them to turn out good. Splatoon turned out good, but its not like they have made any other controversial game other than maybe publish The Wonderful 101 which turned out good too.

  • I think Sony takes way more risk with their games, some of them flop, some of them turn out to be a hit. ANd they've been doing this since the conception of PlayStation.

What does sony have to do here? wrong thread bro

Metroid Prime.

My bet with The_Liquid_Laser: I think the Switch won't surpass the PS2 as the best selling system of all time. If it does, I'll play a game of a list that The_Liquid_Laser will provide, I will have to play it for 50 hours or complete it, whatever comes first.
