Forums - Politics - Gun control in light of 3D printers

Actually, if they ban all guns except 3D printable guns, it would actually reduce the gun crime.

As far as I know, there isn't any consumer level metallic material 3D printer, and common polymers used for consumer level 3D printers and printing accuracy in those printers are horrible for making gun frame, in which reduces accuracy greatly, limits damage caused by bullet, prevents from making them even semi-automatic - as most common polymer would melt, distorted, break and/or bend under high pressure and heat from gunpowder.

Since Metal (Or capable high grade material) printers are absurdly expensive for individual to purchase, it may increase number of active guns, but it will reduce number of threatening guns.

Ergo, US can actually move toward safer-

Dang it, I was just making a speech!

What next? People going on a killing spree with their cars and driving people over.

Therefore I think it would be sensible to make people have to acquire some sort of license to drive a car.

Also the car should be registered to their name and have some kind of license number so it is possible to track it back to the owner.

Also people should have to renew their license from time to time to determine that they are still mentally and physically capable to drive their car.

i know it sounds ridiculous, but cars are dangerous in the wrong hands.

Fair enough, but cars are mainstream and drunk driving is a huge cause of deaths in the US so it's not as if after people get their liscence they always drive saftley. Some people just rush to where they have to go be that work or a meeting. Also, if a 3D printing liscence is as easy as car liscense it only proves my point more.

As I stated above you would really need a lot of police technology on the thing like passkeys, always online, and gun recongition software. Of course the shooter will probably look up a youtube video of how to hack his 3D printer and bypass the security system. This is assuming that this issue is even adressed when they go into production for commercial use because the average person isn't going to make guns with the intent of killing people.

The point is, if there is no gun control anyway, what difference will 3D printing make? It would probably more effort to print your gun than to get a real one.

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

- George Orwell, ‘1984’

Well, I don´t think we should be too worried about that, since there would be very few people actually making guns that way. If the US started enacting very strict gun control laws and did a comprehensive amnesty and rebuy program for guns in the system, you would also slowly change the culture in society to not focus as much on guns.

How does a 3d printer even work. Serious question.

People are always talking about gun control.

But though US gum laws are somewhat weird to me, it's not just the law but the mentality. There are other countries with not so strict gun laws, yet there usually happens way less.

About gun printing:
You need the right materials, still need a load for the cartridges...

While some parts for guns can be easily printed today it's a different story with the gun barrel and other parts. So it's not about affordable 3D printers alone.

The 3D printer can be factory locked or something so that it doesn't print out anything resembling guns, knives and so on.

I don't think that is viable. It would require very high artificial intelligence to guess what device is intended for if design of said gun is made intentionally to avoid detection - and there are too many shapes that would overlap.

Not to mention they could just print multiple parts and assemble together.

I mean, if Germans in World War 2 couldn't recognize dissambled Sten, I doubt computer could.

Create less gun free zones and he'll have less places to attack. Plenty of gunmen have been stopped by concealed carrying citizens even if the media refuses to acknowledge it. It's already easy to get a gun illegally.
