Apple knows better than to get into gaming. Microsoft took Halo from them. They cant outmaneuver Microsoft in dirty tactics so whatever they try should be as casual as hell. Nothing serious.

Apple was a completely different company in 2000/2001 refinding its footing. They are bigger than Microsoft today with larger cash reserves, in fact Apple has larger cash reserves than Microsoft and Google combined, larger cash reserves than several entire industry sectors combined, and larger cash reserves than the US, German, Swedish, Canadian, or British governments.

Forget a game console, they could start their own nation state and it would be among the wealthiest in the world.

They also probably actually make more money from video games today than Microsoft does, even with minimal/almost no effort. iOS is a huge cash cow.

Welp AppleTV does play games. Though as expected it's aimed at the casual crowd.

Though where it's at right now might not be mind blowing but they're only using the A8 chip. Future Apple TVs will no doubt have the A9X chip and beyond, so the graphics capability should be getting better as time goes on.

Also I think that pretty much puts a nail in the coffin of the idea of Nintendo running back to the Wii motion gaming concept. AppleTV has those types of experiences now and they'll be free-$5 a pop, casuals are not going to buy a dedicated console with $40-$60 games for that style of gaming even if it was $199.99 and AppleTV has a much more appealling TV interface/extra functionality for a casual consumer. Nintendo can't compete with that.

Yeah A8 is kind of dissapointing but that's still around Wii-U level though. A9X however is a monster with double the gpu performance of the A8, if Apple pulls that off again next time we will have PS4/Xbox One performance level in a phone/tablet by the end of next year!

A9X is double the A8X. Not the A8. Big different because the A8x and A8 differe so much in terms of power.

Super impressive chips by Apple year after year. The A9 and the A9x stole the show for me today.

Well A8X is supposed to be about 230 gigaflops. So if A9X is 90% better graphics performance, that's about 437 GFLOPS performance, which should pretty handily crush a PS3/360/Wii U at least. Not bad for a mobile component, that's about on par with a Tegra X1, though with Apple's optimization, I wouldn't be surprised if it outperforms it in practice.

Where are you getting the 90% from? Not a lot of difference but I am just curious.

From the conference. A9X has 70% greater CPU performance and 90% greater GPU performance over the A8X.

I see, same cpu as the Iphone 6 then. Thought it would get the chip from the iPad Air 2. That does mean Apple could release a more powerfull version if they wanted to.

Actually the A8X is already faster than the Tegra K1, and that chip is specified at a maximum of 365 GFLOPS(though that might be at higher clock rates). Since the difference between the A8X and A9X is bigger than the K1 and X1, the A9X in theory should beat the Tegra X1 handily.

If it pulls that off, A9X is probably more in the 600-700 GFLOPS range.

I think these stats are for the A8 vs A9, Not A8X vs A9X.

Is that an Evil Corp product?
