I have to say Sony surpassed Nintendo as an industry icon. While many of Nintendo games and characters are household names, they are relying way too much on them on every generation. Mascot or not, it doesn't give any sense of diversity, which is something Sony provided every generation. While anyone can say OoT is the best game in the history of humankind and that nothing else will be as good as that, it would be foolish to ignore the influence of many of PlayStation exclusives, whether first or third party. Award winning franchises like Metal Gear Solid, Uncharted, God of War, The Last of Us, Grand Theft Auto, Final Fantasy, among others, have made a massive impact on the PlayStation consoles throughout the years, and fans will agree. It's diversity that keeps people going back to Sony consoles, because they expect variety. And this is what made it an icon with the first two consoles. I believe that for a company to be iconic, it needs more than mascots and household names.
