Forums - Microsoft - Rumour: Xbox One mini to launch in October. To drop the blu-ray drive?

Risky risky move. It could work, but risky af. Here is Sony (and panasonic) trying to develop larger blueray-style discs: http://www.trustedreviews.com/news/sony-and-panasonic-commit-to-blu-ray-replacement-by-2016
and it is possible they could take off with the added demand on space. If games start becoming larger, and space exceeds 200gb, no one will want to download especially on limited harddrives. Convenience is always a key for consumers.

1/3 of the size of the current? Even without the blu-ray drive, would that really be doable?

Apparently why xbox one is significantly big even without an internal power unit is because of more space for ventilation (to avoid rrod-situation again)

Bluray drive could remove a significant amount of space, then if in these 2 years the hardware engineer has figured out a solution to better engineering, it is possible.

But they also claim it'll be quieter than the already very quiet XBO, and that'll be really f'in hard with a console as small as that, which would heat up really fast.

If they can direct the heat out efficently, smaller fans could work. Smaller fans + a better sound insulation material could work.

Smart move that should already be an option for PS3/360. They could easily sell this for $250 - finally bringing competition to the PS4.

Prediction for console Lifetime sales:

Wii:100-120 million, PS3:80-110 million, 360:70-100 million

[Prediction Made 11/5/2009]

3DS: 65m, PSV: 22m, Wii U: 18-22m, PS4: 80-120m, X1: 35-55m

I gauruntee the PS5 comes out after only 5-6 years after the launch of the PS4.

Sell it for $250 with 3months XBL Gold and a year of EA Access --- I'll buy it in a heartbeat.

Smaller fans=higher RPM=More sound.

This console would also be 43% smaller than the PS4, or nearly half the size of the PS4. Combine that with quieter, and it looks rather unlikely to me.

Not to mention savings from dropping the disc drive would be miniscule mobeywise. MS pays max 10$ per blu-ray drive, so they wouldn't save much on this to begin with.

I don't know about 1/3, but if you remove the disc drive, make the PSU external, and do a die shrink on the chipset to 16nm ... sure it would be considerably smaller. And none of those things are exactly impossible to do.

The PSU on the XBO is external.

Have not put a disk in my XBO since I bought it. But I do use the HDMI In every day and I doubt they'd keep that too.
Physical is for people who like to showoff their collection (okay there are some that are simply proud and don't feel the need to tell the world) and for people who like to hurt devs by buying used games (even though some devs deserve it).

It's probable the current XBox One is larger than it has to be because MS was overly paranoid about the RROD stuff.

So they may be able to shrink a lot just based on trusting their chips a little more, on top of a die shrink to the chipset ... well there ya go.
