Haha I always do. Although I didn't realize that was one of the starting options for X/Y, I assumed it would be some exotic new pokemon?

It still is. You also get to choose the Kanto starters though.

Play ORAS. Much better than XY, especially if you haven't played the originals. XY aren't very good, honestly. Then again, ORAS isn't great either.

Pokémon is still virtually the exact same thing as in generation 2.

The only major addition being a very good online battle system. If you've never been into competitive Pokémon you'll learn a lot of new things though.

Yes, go with X/Y. They're the best Pokémon games ever period. Whoever disagrees is blatantly wrong.

No they're not. Keep in mind I'm just talking about the singleplayer here as I don't care for online:

Way too simple, linear, too easy, zero challenge, zero exploration or puzzles, no end-game content (that is worth a damn), stupid dumb ass story, ugly graphics, poor framerate, no 3D effect.

Well I consider like half of those irrelevant and disagree with the other half.

I thought the single player was brilliant. I never cared about post-game stuff (except gen 2), so the much improved online and competitive play more than made up for that to me.

Yeah like I said, those are really good.

I loved exploring in Silver and discovering Lugia and Ho-Oh by complete accident! Oh and Red of course! No such thing in X/Y. Except Zygarde I guess, that was somewhat fun if too easy to find.

The second generation because the gameplay was still fresh back then.

X is a great choice but you should also get Omega Ruby or Alpha Sapphire to go with it since it'll have some stuff you couldnt find in X/Y.

Also - if you want to invest on training/IV/EV/ etc - get Pokemon Bank especially if you plan to transfer pokemon from this generation to future generations.

if one of my friends gets ruby or saphire will he be able to battle with me in all the same modes online? Also is there a 3v3 option or matchmaking of any form?

I still have my old pokemon blue and silver games, can I transfer my pokemon from those to the current game using pokemon bank or is that impossible? I'm worried the battery on my gameboy cartridges is going to die soon and I'll lose all the pokemon I've caught and traded over the years.

Sorry for all the questions, haven't been keeping up with pokemon at all. Also is there a good way I can learn about the IV/EV stuff. I have a general idea of how it works but would like to be more knowledgeable before I start so that I train correctly from the beginning.

I want to jump back into the game but I have no idea what the differences between the versions are and whether one is considered better than the rest.

My biggest consideration is playing online with my friends. Based off what I've read it seems like Pokemon X/Y are the current king but I would love you guys' input on the matter. Tbh you should be good with X/Y and OS/AS, I found them to be quite fun, X/Y is a good game to get back into the series with with the following games to build on it.
