Forums - Movies & TV - So, 'The Man From U.N.C.L.E.' Bombed harder than the Fantastic Four, are you surprised?

I'm a little surprised that it bombed that hard, but I'm not surprised it flopped. I wasn't really that impressed by the trailer, and I think the movie is a hard sell being that the TV show has not been in the public consciousness for decades. It's a James Bond style of movie without a personality who has remained in the public mind ever since the 60's. Many people are just going to think, meh, 007 Spectre is not far away and it sounds much better.

But damn! It doesn't deserve to do half what F4 did on its opening week. Shows the power of Marvel, even when it bombs it doesn't bomb as hard as other bombs.

Even though TMFU has earned A LOT more praise from critics it seems like there isn't the sort of buzz about the movie that will give its theatrical run legs.

I'm not surprised at all.

I'm going to watch it, it might be surprisingly good like the Kingsmen

It was most definitely good. With the Sherlock Holmes movie director that was a given. I'd say it wasn't quite as good as Kingsmen, but it was definitely no slouch.

Maybe if more superhero movies and remakes start bombing, we might actually get an original movie filmed in a couple of years.

Interesting you should mention Sherlock Holmes. In TMFU lore the main shadow organisation was formed after Prof Moriarty's death in the Sherlock Holmes book that corresponds to the SH2 movie where Moriarty dies (Reichenbach Falls). I think the movie could have actually benefitted from being linked to RDJ's Sherlock in that way.

Oh yeah, I forgot TMFU has been sandwiched between MI5 and 007. Kind oif a nop brainer for people who are thinking 3 movies of a similar nature in one "season" is too much. Ditch TMFU because the other two are more well known quanitities.

I'm definitely surprised. I thought it'd do well. Though, I gotta admit, I hate the title.

It didn't bomb at all. It skews towards an older audience who don't rush out to see movies at the theaters. It only cost $75 million (minus marketing) which is a lot less than Fantastic Four. It should make money in the end.

Please Watch/Share this video so it gets shown in Hollywood.

well it wasnt marketed well IMO. this is the first time i actually heard about this title.

I can just about remember seeing re-runs on TV as a young kid and my parents watching it. Otherwise, I would never have given the film a second thought.

Still going to go and watch it, though.
