Forums - Sony - SONY should have bought SNK instead of Call of Duty DLC, they are losing their insight

I've pared down that list a tiny bit to IP that still might have some potential:

King of Fighters
Samurai Showdown
Fatal Fury
Lee Trevino's Fighting Golf

With everything else, Sony has tons of unused IP of their own that are better in terms of potential profit generation.

Now, ask yourself this:  is it worth $60M for the rights to three fighting game franchises most people outside of Japan don't even remember when you have Street Fighter V as an exclusive?  Not to mention a handful of other Japanese fighting games as de facto exclusives?

COD bundles will sell loads. It was a good decision by them and a bad decision by MS to stop paying Activision for the marketing rights.

If I was Sony I wouldn't have either as that'd just be a wasted $60M that could've went towards better games and exclusive contents to increase sales and market share.

Two things that would interest buyers to purchase SNK are the fighting games and Metal Slug, however...

- SNK's fighting games are barely surviving and Sony already has exclusive to Street Fighter 5 which is the biggest fighting game ever so what's the point. If Sony bought SNK they'd have to waste their resources on a dying fighting game franchise rather than focusing on SF which would be a bad move.

- Metal Slug is a fun game, but hell, to these day standards Metal Slug can be seen as a typical indie game that can be easily cloned (ie. contra style games/ hardcorps)

..and the rest of SNK's game are pretty much worthless.

SNK is not popular anymore. Ask the average gamer to name 3 none KoF or MS games. SNK would be awesome but what do they offer SONY cant elsewhere cheaper?

I love SNK but I dont why SONY needs them. If any of the big 3 should bite it should be Nintendo.

Killer Instinct was also never popular until MS rebooted it. SNK has plenty of fighting games which could be rebooted by giving it to Guilty Gear devolopers or something, it would have been cheaper than the Sreet Fighter 5 Deal.

" 3.2 million it sold." isn't popular?  That's just the SNES version.

Did anyone know it was for sale?

This sounds like an under the counter kind of arrangement.

Looking over that list of IPs there's not much in here with any amount of current day appeal worth mentioning, definitely nothing big.

Seperate your desire of what you want exclusively on PS4, from what would actually make a $60mil acquisition as well as the ongoing cost of upkeeping these studios worthwile and I'd argue that there's really nothing there that would be a reason for Sony to acquire that company.

Nintendo lacks the money right now. For Sony it makes sense to buy them because the Neo Geo was before the playstation it never tried to compete with Sony

Really hard to take you seriously when you say things like this.   Nintendo's warchest is plenty full, even with all that has gone on with the Wii U.

Better question should be "Did anyone know SNK was for sale?"

This! Haven't heard anything pointing to it before the news of SNK's aquisition anywhere.

They have almost enough in their warchest to buy out SONY, SNK's 60 millions are small fries for them

The Neo Geo competed with the PS1. Sure, it got released during the previous gen but sales continued throughout the whole following generation as well. There's a reason why games where still made for the system long after the Playstation was released.
