Forums - Microsoft - Phil Spencer: Fewer 3rd party exclusives, focus is on 1st party

Well the PS4 pretty much outsold xb1 almost 3:1 this quarter shows how much sony is dominating. No third party publisher in their right mind would give them an exclusive. It simply isnt an option for MS anymore. Well it could be a very expensive one.

As far as exclusives, their second party efforts this gen have been going well, their first party remains the usual halo, gears, fable and forza. But if they continue like this then the xb1's exclusive line up will be much better than the 360's

Sounds good, bring it.

Best case scenario (out of their perspective) they actually start making some cool shit that makes me buy an X1, worst case I at least don't have to worry about a multiplat series I like going to Xbox exclusively.

During Phil Spencer's interview at China Joy 2015, the following was said:

My strategy is more around our own first party franchises, and investing in franchises that we own, and probably fewer exclusive deals for third party content. I want to have strong third party relations, but paying for many third party exclusives *uhm* isn’t our long term strategy. This year, the fact that we’re shipping Halo 5, Gears of War, Fortza 6, Fable, we can only do that and build that best line-up we’ve ever seen really on the back of franchises that we own. It’s great to have Tomb Raider as part of our line-up, but investing in first party, you’ll see more of that at gamescom next week, is really core to our strategy.

I love how he pronounces Forza 6! I look forward to seeing how the first party investment pays of.

You mean correctly? With the T sound in it? or you just mean an American accent handling a Italian word?

Quoted from Microsoft PR

"Microsoft Studios includes 343 Industries, Turn 10 Studios, and Lionhead Studios just to name a few," he wrote. "These industry-leading game studios within Microsoft that have had great success with beloved games and massively popular franchises like Halo, Forza, and Fable. We're excited to welcome Mojang to the Microsoft family and we are thrilled to support the success and longevity of Minecraft for years to come."

The deal came from the Xbox division pocket.

Just because it's counted among the MS game studios, which it now is, doesn't mean it was an Xbox division purchase, the Minecraft purchase goes way beyond that and was decided at a way higher level, I actually doubt Spencer has that much money to throw around for his division.

so basically they can't afford....

Microsoft? BWAHAHAHAHA!

With that amount of cash they could have secured so many exclusives this gen and new IPs, that the Xbox One could have won at least a couple of markets around the globe, but no...Minecraft.

And if it's one thing Microsoft doesn't have, It's another $2B dollars right? Ah, out of the mouths of babes.

This might be bad. What was the last succesful ip that a microsoft studio created? Forza?

When Microsoft owned the Studio and IP (studios that are still active)

  • Halo: - 2001 -65m+ (Microsoft Purchased Bungie a year and a half before Halo released when it was a 3rd person Squad based game)
  • Forza - 2005 - 20m +
  • Kinect Adventures  - 2010- 25-30 M+
  • Project Spark: 2013 -  3M+
  • Kinect Sports: 8m+

That Microsoft had a significant hand in development with a third party and now own and develop internally:

  • Gears of War -2006 -  25M+
  • Fable - 2004 - 15M +

That they simply had good relations with before outright purchasing :

Minecraft- 2009 - 70m+

By comparison:

When Sony owned the Studio and IP

  • Gran Turismo: - 1997 -73M+
  • God of War - 2005 - 21M +
  • Uncharted  - 2007 - 21M+
  • The Last of Us - 2013 - 7M+

That Sony had a significant hand in development with a third party and now own and develop internally:

  • inFAMOUS - - 2009 -  6M+
  • Little Big Planet -2008 - 10M +
  • Killzone- 2004 - 10M+
  • Motorstorm - 2007 - 5M+

Side by side in sales order:

  • Minecraft: 2009 - 70m+                                              Gran Turismo: - 1997 -73M+
  • Halo: - 2001 -65m+                                                       god of war  - 2007 - 21M+
  • Kinect Adventures  - 2010- 25-30 M+                       Uncharted  - 2007 - 21M+
  • Gears of War -2006 -  25M+                                        Little Big Planet -2008 - 10M +
  • Forza - 2005 - 20m +                                                     Killzone- 2004 - 10M+
  • Fable - 2004 - 15M +                                                     The Last of Us - 2013 - 7M+
  • Kinect Sports: 8M+                                                         inFAMOUS - - 2009 -  7M+
  • Project Spark: 2013 -  3M+                                           Motorstorm - 2007 - 5M+

I guess it's good news for my wallet cause its saves me the trouble of ever getting a X1.
It is just another repeat of the 360, as I immediatelly thought once their E3 2015 happened
both consoles: first 1-2 years some decent different games and variety, rest of gen Forza/Halo/Gears ad nauseum.

My sentiment exactly, the way they started this generation, I was afraid they'll continue paying to keep games away from gamers. We were in luck that Sony completely dominates them, so it became prohibitively expensive to pull the Tomb Raider crap over and over again.

Sure, they can afford to do it, but it has become really tough to justify:

"So you paid $150 million for [multiplat franchise]?"

"Yeah, it was coming to XOne anyway, but we paid so PS4 owners cannot play it!"

"Not a huge amount to buy a popular IP!"

"No, not the IP, just this one game. It was being made multiplat, all we did was pay to cancel the PS4 version"

"Oh..I see! GTFO, You're fired!"

This whole "they can afford it" sentiment has to stop anyway, Xbox is just a part of MS, they do not have free access to MS' bank account so to speak, they are on a budget like every other business as well. Also considering that since the launch of this gen now the PS division has been generating more revenue and likely profit than Xbox it seems far more unlikely that Xbox would be operating under a higher budget.

Sure Spencer can try and make his case for more money for certain projects at the higher ups but it should at this point be noticably harder for him to convince Nadella etc. to get a budget increase than it should potentially be for House etc. it's all about the standing of the division inside the company.

That would probably change if MS was looking to completely get the competition out of the business, but we'd notice it if that was the case.

I hope so gimme more games that are unique like sea of thives
