Minecraft was the most popular new ip of last gen. So yeah, that was a good deal.

Im not saying that it was a good or bad deal, but just like Amiibos give loads of money to Nintendo, at the end of the day what does that give to you as a gamer?

Would you have prefered 10 new exclusives for the X1 or the Minecraft deal? Be sincere.

The Minecraft deal wasn't done for X1. That purchase didn't need to happen to bring Minecraft to X1.

Exclusives are coming in spite of that deal.

"Microsoft Studios includes 343 Industries, Turn 10 Studios, and Lionhead Studios just to name a few," he wrote. "These industry-leading game studios within Microsoft that have had great success with beloved games and massively popular franchises like Halo, Forza, and Fable. We're excited to welcome Mojang to the Microsoft family and we are thrilled to support the success and longevity of Minecraft for years to come."

The deal came from the Xbox division pocket.

The Xbox division focuses on Xbox games. Minecraft is a multiplat game and MS said they wanted it to push Hololens.

Hence, you look at the Minecraft deal as something they did primarily for X1. In a nutshell, you're wrong. Minecraft is their popular title on many platforms, not something used to just push the X1.

If he can deliver on this, then that'd be great. MS has been sorely lacking on the first-party front compared to Nintendo and Sony. Nintendo is utterly dependent on their first-party output, and Sony has really made an effort to expand their own first-party efforts over the past decade. Meanwhile, MS's own first-party output was essentially Halo, Forza, and Fable, and now Gears is first-party as well. You'd get a one-off game like Crackdown every now and then, but most of their big AAA experiences revolved around just three franchises. Even Rare, once one of the most respected developers there was back when they partnered with Nintendo, eventually became a shadow of their former selves after being bought out by MS. Sure, they made Viva Pinata, but they also made the mediocre Perfect Dark Zero and over the past five years were relegated to making Kinect games. Rare is now making Sea of Thieves, which looks nice (though I'm not really big on MMOs since they come with an expiration date), so we'll see if they go back to being as good as they once were.

MS has a ton of IPs already at their disposal that they've left collecting dust for the past 13 years since they bought Rare. While some of those older games are being released as part of Rare Replay, some of those IPs would be ripe for continuation. MS did publish a new Killer Instinct, but we could use a proper Perfect Dark sequel, or maybe a new Blast Corps or Battletoads as XBLA titles. And of course MS could foster production of new IPs. Over the coming year most of the new IPs coming exclusively to Xbox are second- or third-party titles (e.g., Quantum Break by Remedy, ReCore by Comcept, Scalebound by Platinum).

MS can do better. They should do better. And I hope they actually do better because there's a lot of blue and white spines on my games rack and not enough green. My Halo discs will need more company than Gears and Crackdown.

MS was pumping out Arcade games/ budget games consistently throughout X360 era.

Rare was re-structuring as a studio since they shipped Perfect Dark on N64. This myth of them getting mediocre after being bought by MS is a fallacy.

Nintendo forewent Rare stakes. If they thought Rare was good at the time they wouldn't have let them go. Especially when Rare was making games better than they did.

MS Studios can concentrate on making their holy trifecta and leave 2nd party contractors do the rest. It's much more cost-effective and less time consuming.

Im looking at it from the outside because i dont have nor im planning to purchase an Xbox One but just wondering, what else could they have made with that obsene amount of money.

Like i said, the money came from the Xbox division. Thats a fact, whether Minecraft stays multi or not. They could have used the money for other purposes.

I think that's very wise of Phil. The xbox one is lacking in exclusives all across the board but 1st party new IPs are the most important.

Microsoft published and funded the game so.........

Because of another teams talent and ideas.

He's asking about a developer under the ownership of microsoft, coming up with something big.

Since the begining of time that is how video games are made.

Are we talking about the same company that spent 2 billion dollars on....Minecraft?

Minecraft is a trans-platform game. A $2 billion decision was not made by amateurs.

Minecraft sells stupidly well on any platform it is available on.

With that amount of cash they could have secured so many exclusives this gen and new IPs, that the Xbox One could have won at least a couple of markets around the globe, but no...Minecraft.

First off, buying new ips is harder than you think. The reason why it was easy for Microsoft to obtain Minecraft is because it was privatley own. They won't get hit as hard with anti competition laws. Second off, Minecraft can be very huge for Microsoft. Yes, with 2 billion dollars they could've made more new ips, but will it be as successful as Minecraft? Highly doubt it. From a financial stand point it makes sense.

You're completely missing the point.
