Yo-kai Watch, Monster Hunter, Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest are the only big rpgs in Japan. Mario & Luigi, Paper Mario and Fire Emblem are a level below the big four (I probably forgot some other games as well here).

A magazine isn't going to call a niche franchise that doesn't sell very well a big announcement. The potential backlash could be huge.


Pokemon isn't big in Japan then?

I'd like to entertain the possibility that perhaps they struck a deal with SE to make a new Valkyrie Profile game since the series has gotten three games in 15 years, the last one having been made seven years ago. It's obviously not a series SE is all that invested in, and I could see them making some kind of deal for X% of profits or some such. It just seems silly to me to do a big teaser and to announce two names, one of which was predominately involved with only two series, one of which already has a game in development, as well as someone who was conveniently involved in the same series that hasn't gotten a new game in over half a decade, if it's really just for a spiritual successor or a totally new project.

I would like it to be VP more than a spiritual successor even if it's the same thing, because it would make Square Enix even more awesome than they already are, that would be good to see them come back as the best of the best in the video game industry ( though i guess Dragon Quest XI will be enough to say they are )
