Forums - Gaming - crazy thing just happened at my store

so i dont know if a lot of you guys know, but i work at a locally owned video game store that sells anything from atari 2600 to X1. I have been working here since 2009, and i have seen some pretty crazy/weird/disgusting things here, but nothing quite like this.

so this guy comes in with a black bag that kind of looks like a laptop carrier or something. he asks if we buy nintendo games, and i say yes we do. so he says, "thats great! i have one here for you"

I take a look at it and its a severely damaged dragon warrior being held together haphazardly with some tape. i shake it a little bit and hear bits of stuff rattling around in there and i tell the guy that there is no way we could buy this.

when i told him this, he completely flips out and says, "you can't buy this? oh yes you can." he pulls out a scale and tells me to weigh it, and i said no. so he weighs it himself and screams, "tell me how much this weighs! and you're telling me you can't buy this?" with spit fllying out of his disgusting mouth.

at this point i am completely stunned, and kind of speechless. he asked me if i believe in a moral compass or if i have a moral standard that i live my life by. i really had no interest in discussing creation and evolution with this guy so i told him that is completely irrelevant.

before any of this had even happened, there were two customers in the store. one of them bolted out as soon as things got crazy and the other looks at me and motions to me with his hands that he has a bat in his car that he can go get.

things kind of continue like this and he is really just going off the handle talking crazy ass shit about evolution and a moral highground. my coworker gets involved and actually tries discussing these things with him in order to calm him down and get him to leave. but as soon as it circles back around to we cannot buy the game, he gets crazy again, and proclaims that he wants 21 dollars for it. he told my coworker that he made him feel really small and that he is going to come back and shoot us. at this point, my coworker drew the line and asked if i had called the cops yet, and i said no, go ahead and do it.

so this crazy asshole is still standing there making a bunch of noise, but then leaves because he knows the cops are coming. the last thing he said was, looking directly at me, "you really humiliated me."

all this happened literally within the last thirty minutes, so i wanted to write it down while it was fresh in my mind and share it with you guys. i have worked at gamestop from 2007-2009 and at this store since 2009, and i have to say this is definitely the worst i have ever seen. have you guys worked at video game stores and seen somebody get worked up like this? i honestly feel like this is something video game retailers specifically have to deal with more often as opposed to other retail shops because we are in the business of buying people's old crap.

what do you guys think about all this?

You are clearly dealing with a case of paranoid schizophrenia.  They operate on fear but the key to beating them is simply show no fear. That is different from being aggressive.  It means max assertiveness.

ok. i appreciate that insight. i think i was acting aggressive, but what i was trying to be was stern. i dont think i pulled it off very well.

Its unfortunate but society doesnt always help the weakest, enough.
The result is you end up with crazies running around off their meds.

Either that or he was really desperate for the money.... like starving to death / going cold turkey, if he cant get some money, kinde of desperate.

Yeah I have had first hand experience dealing with these type of folks.  I can say for sure that assertiveness is the best way to handle them.  Its definitely an acquired skill so don't beat yourself up over it either. I think you handled yourself very well.

I'm glad you're Ok, bro. We never know what some people are capable to do.

I agree with CosmicSex. This may be a case of schizophrenia.

Thanks man. Honestly, i was a little nervous after he left because of his comment about being humiliated. Never know what someone is capable of doing when they feel humiliated especially lol. but I feel a little better now i guess. hope he doenst come back.

Some people, man.....

He must've been desperate to try and sell something like a completely broken NES game.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."
