Forums - Sony - Square has become a Sony 2nd Party this generation

The success of Square Enix depends on PS4s success so they need it to sell better particularly in Japan.

That is also why they announce the games so soon.

You're quite mistaken if you think people in their 20s and 30s don't play video games anymore......

Oh its not that. Its just that I don't think that some DQ spinoffs and a remake of a game from the mid 90s will singlehandedly revive the console market in Japan. It would need to be something like a cultural phenomenon to do this feat.

But FF VII is a cultural phenomenon. As the console market in Japan is all but dead with 4 million "new gen" consoles sold. Even if FF VII will be trashed because "not true to the original" (lately any excuse is good to bash any FF game) it's undeniable that it will sell well, no matter if just out of curiosity from people to judge it themselves.

Then if it will be impressive it will remind some Japanese how the real games look and play, unlike that mobile junk.

Japanese gamers have the reputation of buying a system just for one game. I heard that it's common for a person to buy a console and the game and when finishing it selling the game and the console. This is the very reason why big released don't hold legs there its not because interest fades away soon, but because once the gamers finished the game they go and sell it to the used store, than flooding the market with cheap used copies. This is why they have to put as much content as possible in the games, so people hold their copies for more time and guarantee some legs.

Those FF games will do just fine, and remember AAA games release for higher prices there than on us, and ff and dq usually releases for ,80-100 dollars. But it doesn't mean other games will capitalize on that.

I really don't think this will revive consoles in Japan. They need to do something crazy and unexpected like Nintendo did with Splatoon. Something like that gets attention and sells consoles.

I agree

PS4 18,171
Vita 14,067
Wii U 12,781

Sony or Squeenix should make a Splatoon clone.

I think you should update your exchange rates, The most expensive game I've found in Amazon JP is 8208 Yen. Equivalent of $66.8. Batman, which just released recently in Japan is sold for 6600 Yen ($53.71). In continental Europe the games are more expensive: up to 70€ = $77.8. But only because the euro finally dropped. Otherwise we paid for years up to $94. And still the games are sellng quite well.

Then, sorry, but I don't buy that thing about Japanese people buying and reselling consoles. Both PS4 and Wii U are selling decent numbers in Japan each week. 13K consoles each the last vghcartz numbers. But yeah, it may be true for games.

Big AAA games, Japanese hits are expensive, FF XIII released for 8.800 yen, which was around 80$ dollars. Other big Japanese releases are more expensive, DQ Ix at release was the equivalent of 60$ , which is expensive  for a game for handelheld. Anyway, there are games that don't have to worry about the market because they sell systems on their own,.

FF7 WAS a cultural phenomenon. In 1997 when prerendered backgrounds and FMVs were mindblowing high end graphics. Today people will end up demanding the game be full 3D with full voice acting and a different battle system because the old system won't be relevant. There are just too many places where this game can go wrong and ends up not appeasing everyone and sales just tank. I just don't think that its magically going to turn the console situation in Japan.
