It's alright.

You dissapointed at your gotg I see.

It's not the GOTG. It's going to be second place, just like last gen. This GOTG is gona be the same as last gen :)

So yeah, nothing changes around here.

My only problem: WTF are the other 11 million PS+ subscribers doing. They need to get their act together and play this masterpiece.

I'm still playing PS+ games that I got in 2013.

Not enough to make up for 1.2m potential missed sales.

Nah, there's got to be more to it that makes them figure that it's financially worth it. Something tangible and something big.

I'm certain it is not 1.2m missed sales. If it were 600K it would be an exaggeration.

I mean, I myself would not have paid €20 for this game (and would have been mistaken, of course). I would have waited for a 50% off sale at least.

But still, the payment was certainly a few million, plus some future draft picks.

EDIT: And I see a physical release for it in the future, might get some PS+ folks to double dip as well.

A few million? I doubt it.

Yep. If they have 1.2 million players you would imagine that at best only  a small percentage of them would of actually gone out and bought the game if it wasn't "free". So even if it wasn't on PS Plus you'd only be looking at an absolute maximum of 25-50k sales in the first week.  At perhaps $10-15 a pop, I bet Sony still paid them more than that would have totalled to get the game on PS Plus. They won't have done bad out of all this.

PREDICTIONS FOR END OF 2015: (Made Jan 1st 2015)

PS4 - 34M - XB1 - 21m - WII U -12M

I wouldn't have purchased it had it not been on PS+.... it's an ok game, very much like the same game I purchased on PS3 way back.

...It is though. 1.2 million players did not buy the game. Those sales are missed. They never happened. With Rocket League being a primerily online multiplayer game, I doubt even .01% of players didn't download it for free via PS Plus.

Which means Sony had to make up for that somehow to make it worth it.

I didn't explain properly...

If it were not free for PS+ owners, many of them would not have actively paid for the game.

There are around 12 million (or even more) PS+ subscriptions, so 90% of people did not even bother playing a free game, now imagine how many of the remaining 10% would pass on it at $/€ 20.

And, yes, of course it is a online game, so it is doubtful that many people would pay $70 (sub + game) if it were not free. Just to play this game. But now, a newcomer might pay $50, as he will not only get this game, but at least three more this month and about 30-40 more in the following 11 months.

So, I do believe that Sony paid them a lot, but it certainly wasn't at a projection of 1.2 million (my guess 2 million by the weekend), but most likely at a lower install percentage the game would have gotten if it asked for $20.

I doubt that either Sony or Psyonix are unhappy about this deal.

Ah. I see what you're getting at. Yeah, that makes sense.

I'm sure everybody is very happy. This game is a success. I was just curious about the maths behind it all. I think you explained it fairly well.

It's worth noting that while a deal like this can reduce the potential long-term profitability of a game because of 'lost' sales, it can also dramatically reduce the risk involved (or even completely mitigate it if Sony gave them more than the developer's total investment in the project, which i'd guess was the case here). That alone can make such deals very appealing.

Regardless, without knowing how much it would have sold without the PS+ edition (or how many copies the developer was hoping to sell), there's not much point in a debate like this. We don't have the details we'd need to make any kind of guess at the worth of the deal to both parties.

I wasn't trying to debate anything. I'm genuinely curious. I think launching this game for free on PS=is a fantastic idea, genius even, but it obviously came with some major caviots. I was merely intrested in any guesses as to what those caviots might be.
