Forums - Gaming - How do you explain Nintendo dominating the top 20 on the week of 2nd May 2015

Not really domination, but 25% of the top 20 (and 10% of the global top 50) being Wii U games isn't bad for a such a struggling system.

Even better is the fact that over a third of the top 50 games are for Nintendo platforms and over 25% of the global top 50 are actually published by Nintendo themselves.

Of course the Wii U isn't a dead console, but I don't really think the Wii U is dominating..

..I'm not seeing any domination

Which company has the most games in the top 20? X1 and PS4 are battling each other. So neither are really close in the top 20 to Nintendo.

agree?

Nintendo: 8
Sony: 7

Sure, Nintendo have the most no doubt about that. But a win by only 1 is pretty close and is far from 'domination'

Your weighing system is flawed because it weighs 178,942 to be equal to 150,039. Looking at total software sales:

Nintendo: 561,685 = 178942 + 98586 + 86574 + 84673 + 32968 + 32133 + 25026 + 22783

Sony: 377,891 = 150039 + 56310 + 43394 + 40188 + 32542 + 28465 + 26953

Microsoft 202,899 = 90404 + 56715 + 30356 + 25424

PC: 29,244

I wasn't using any weighing system. I was merely counting the entries in the top 20. OP claimed top 20 dominance, and to dominate the top 20 surely you'd need a large number of entries there, no?

Even if he was referring to software sales among the top 20 Nintendo still isn't that far ahead of Sony and doesn't even have 50% of the market so you can't really call that 'dominance'.

Um...Does it have to be exactly 50%? Because

561685 + 377891 + 202899 + 29244 = 1171719

561685 / 1171719 = 47.9%

From wikipedia:

  • A company, brand, product, or service that has a combined market share exceeding 60% most probably has market power and market dominance.

So no, even 50% wouldn't be enough to be considered 'dominance'.

Edit: It just annoys me when people overuse the term. To dominate doesn't just mean winning, it means to be winning by a considerable margin, and rarely is that the case when people say 'dominating' on here. Now saying Android dominate the smartphone market with their 78% of the market (as shown here) is an example of actual dominance.

I see, so I was wrong in believing the people that said PS4 was dominating with 50% market share. Thank you for helping me undertand the definition of dominance.

4 consoles, new releases and no domination.

In fact, this is what needs explanation.

How do you explain the urge to cherrypick (only the top 20, ignoring the overall sales data) within even cherrypicked data (only one week or one region)?

Just look at the yearly software sales so far: http://www.vgchartz.com/yearly/2015/Global/
Not much Nintendo domination there to boast about.

As far as why they are on top software wise _this_ week? Puzzle & Dragons Z + Super Mario Bros. Edition (3DS) first week, Xenoblade Chronicles X (Wii U) first week, Dragon Quest X: Mezameshi Itsutsu no Shuzoku Online (Wii U, 3DS) has good legs.

Not saying Nintendo doesn't have good software to push right now but it is far off from dominating this year and does not meet the technical definition of dominating this week either.

Oh and holy shit yearly software sales for all platforms. PS4 and PS3 hold the top 2 slots. PS3 and X360 are having good software sales still. PS3 will probably pass Wii lifetime software soon and X360 already has.

It still ain't a big win, it's a minor blip on the radar... a cherrypicked week where Nintendo had some big releases and the rest had none.
