Forums - Gaming - Xbox One, PS4 sales "disappointing" in China - Report

Well, China is still a poor country in general.

No it isn't, the middle and upper class are huge. The problem is both console suck from a user perspective as if you buy an official one then you have an extremely limited list of games you can use. Those that can afford them will import them not buy a locked down second rate localised version.

I am still shocked that Nintendo never got up in China. Almost their entire library is legal there. Nintendo should have been the first one in there with a complete advertising blitz showing how many games can legally be played on it.

They've done that song and dance with the Chinese government before via their subsidiary iQue.  While the iQue systems were never going to and were never ment to sell gangbusters, they clearly weren't even remotely successful enough of an experiment.

If China is poor then what does that make the rest of us?

India is on at list? Hundreds of thousands of people can't afford 3 square meals in that country.

Hell, 25% of the people don't even have access to electricity!

Looking at the world bank's statistics, 805M people lived on less than $5 a day in China in 2011. Yes, there are some rich people but, overall, it is a poor country.

Using the purchasing power parity (PPP) metric is flawed ...

A much more realistic way to measure wealth is to compare a country's nominal GDP and China still has quite a ways to go before it can match the US on that front ...

Plus China has a high population to nominal GDP ratio so that further reduces the citizens income power ...

There's this too. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_Human_Development_Index......which is representative of a host of reasons as to why quality of life in China is generally poor. Watch out Tunisia. Soon, China could be the 90th best country to live in. And this metric factors in GDP a fair amount. There is an arguably better system. I can't emember' it's name right now.

Did it actually sell Nintendo franchises though? I really thought that Wii U could have done something good in China.

there are hundreds of thousands in the US, UK and Russia that also can't afford 3 square meals a day. (actually more likely millions). India also has millions of rich and middle class.

that's by PPP, not GDP. Also Canada is number 10 on GDP :D.

Russia and the U.S. are relatively poor so that's understandable. I'm dubious about the UK - they must have made bad choices if they cannot afford to eat. As for India, I revised my statement to hundreds of millions cannot afford 3 square meals. Something like 95% of the country live on under $5 a day.
