Forums - Nintendo - Wii homebrew makes another stride

Team Twiizers Wii Zelda Twilight hack has recently been updated. The major change is the ability to boot Wii homebrew using the SD card slot of the Wii. Moreover, SD gecko support has been removed in favor of adding USB gecko support. Full information is available at Wiibrew.org.

my take:

So now the SD card slot can used for homebrew booting. This is interesting because I really wonder how far away they are from running gamecube games, roms (and eventually Wii games) off a SD card. Imo, it's only a matter of time before there is a no mod/soft mod tool for wii owners wanting to run backups. the Wii is in the same generation as the PS2 was last generation. Given it's popularity, there is an inevitable demand (and people wanting to profit off said hacking) for modchips/backup solutions. Just like there was a flood of ps2 modchips early on, i see there being many soft mod/no mod solutions coming for the Wii.

I'd prefer people refrain from discussing ethics of such behaviour in this thread as that's a topic thats been beaten to death repeatedly (and focus on the possible implications of an easy to mod wii instead) but it's inevitable so just try to keep it civil.

I say Nintendo bricks the wiis. Just send apple class search for modded wiis and brick it.

well, even if a soft mod becomes available, it won't be widespread because it only works on older copies of Twilight Princess.

If we assume nintendo sold 50% of the copies before finding the fix, then ~2.3m users could even take advantage of this soft mod. And even then, what percentage of those do you think actually even care about modding. So say 1m users can now soft mod that isn't really that big of a hit on nintendo's user base. Sure its something, but until they find another game to do this to, then it really isn't nearly as big a deal as say soft modding a PSP.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

^ unless, of course, the copy of TP is only needed for the initial flashing. i'm just speculating, though.

Yeah why???? Are you a collectah????

this is definitely great news. I'm still waiting for the point where we can have homebrew channels on the Wii without having to stick a dvd into the drive.

Help! I'm stuck in a forum signature!

This is very bad, now hackers have a source to store the Roms.

I think you guys are overestimating the importance of this ...

The nature of this exploit is far too limited to have much of a widespread appeal for homebrew development; until hackers can directly boot unsigned code without a hardware modification it is (mostly) and academic pursuit.
