Wow, that controller looks sick. Nintendo could have used a design like this.

I think a smaller screen would be better. 3DSXL upper screen size is ok for gamepad screen.
And yes they should have shaped it as a controller. With a smaller screen, would be easier to desing.

the only way to make it less bulky it to have a smaller screen. Using the other concept would make the controller bigger if you want to retain the size of the screen. The gamepad design is good as it is

What is NFC?

Could even look better than your rough version. Remove superfluous fatures like the front facing camera (no one uses this), the mic (it has a headphone/headset jack), replace the larger current speakers with a small weak one (again, it has a headphone/headset jack), move the NFC chip under the screen, and shrink the home button to a strip more like the 3DS XL. Also, make the screen more or less the size of a Droid Ultra screen or so. Smaller, but not a big deal to shrink it. All that would allow for a far more attractive profile.  And it would have focused the gamepad on its true potential:  gaming.  The current one has all kinds of issues mainly cause it feels like it was trying to be a tablet when it had more potential in a more pure, gaming focus.
