Nintendo fans bought MK8. Splatoon is getting both Nintendo fans AND new people on board. I think that's what were seeing. I could be wrong though.

I saw people waiting until Zelda to buy a Wii U. However, besides Zelda, I don't see any more megatons this big coming in the future
Splatoon is at 408,311 unit. It must sell other 170,305 unit for beat Mario Kart 8 firsts 10 weeks.
Well it's safe to say there's absolutely no way Splatoon is catching Mario Kart 8's sales of it's first 10 weeks.
But if Splatoon continues to hold on and flex the insane legs (or tentacles I should say) that it has.
It is possible that it could eventually catch and maybe surpass Mario Kart 8's lifetime sales figures in Japan!

Mario Kart 8 outsold Splatoon by 95k.
Well, it was a very nice battle after all... well done Splat. Well done Mario.
I love how Splatoon was slowly but surely closing that gap.
I expect that trend to continue to the point where it may very well surpass Mario Kart 8's lifetime Japan sales.

Man, I don't think anyone could've predicted that Splatoon would catch up to MK8 launches aligned, but it looks like it's going to happen sometime this year. Depends on how they handle it this holiday though.
Pretty insane for a new IP console game. I didn't think there would be a majorly successful one in Japan this gen.
Splatoon catching up with Mario Kart!? WOW :)
Splatoon will easily pass Smash Bros. this year, I think currently difference is only 100-200k.
No more updates?
My bet with The_Liquid_Laser: I think the Switch won't surpass the PS2 as the best selling system of all time. If it does, I'll play a game of a list that The_Liquid_Laser will provide, I will have to play it for 50 hours or complete it, whatever comes first.
