Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo Shareholders Meeting: LIVE REACTIONS!

Iwata: "Smart devices include phones and tablets, which have large global install bases. Profits on big hits are very large. However, this isn't an easy world in which just adding famous Nintendo characters will result in a big hit. As for monetization, there are regular sales and paid items or "free to play" systems. I don't think that "free to play" is a good word, so I call it "free to start.".

We want to target many users irrespective of age, gender, game experience, or region to earn small payments from many users. We're planning titles for this year and next, but not a large number of them. Console SW have big impacts on release, & slow down."

^ atleast this means theyve spent some time resently doing SW for the Wii U instead of just makeing mobile Apps.

"free to start" has me abit worried about Nintendos free to play games for mobile.

I don't know how fair that is. It's franckly the only viable model for a company with Nintendo's goals to take.

Bold predictions indeed, and pretty crazy and kind of exciting to see it all become a reality. I mostly hear people contantly say they should buy Capcom, but I wonder if people uderstand that once you buy into something, you also inherit their debt.

Overall, I do believe Nintendo could wonders for Capcom. To me, it seems like every time they work together something good always comes out of it.. whether it's Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, or Mega Man.. even with Platinum Games. There's so much Capcom history there, and to see how they worked together for Wondeful 101, Bayonetta, and now Star Fox shows that their is some magic to be made with all of that staff.

Nintendo should at least try to secure IP's like Mega Man and Resident Evil to bring them back to their glory. I could see Mega Man being a Nintendo thing again.. but Resident Evil is such a mess now that it would be best for Nintendo to invest on an alternate series of the franchise. Don't let things like Revelations get sequels that turn into terrible things. Revelations had so much potetial.. they should have done everything they could to secure that game and overlook its development.

Like I said in an earlier post, even if a full buy out didn't happen, Nintendo would be in just as big a position if they were able to secure another Capcom 5-level exclusive deal with Capcom for the NX. Only this time using just established franchises and making sure they are true exclusives this time. Resident Evil, Mega Man, Monster Hunter, Devil May Cry, and Nintendo vs. Capcom. Invest now. Profit later.

So seeing Iwata mostly make sense combined with his complete dissociation with E3 got me wondering.

Nintendo's messages have been mixed this whole gen and they've flip flopped a lot in terms of tone, content, and extent of advertizing and general promotion. To me, this seems to signify turmoil in the ranks at Nintendo. So I wonder if part of what we saw with the E3 Digital Event wasn't Iwata and his faction letting their opponents hang themselves? That is a legitimate means of dealing with dissenters who just won't quit and have support of people throughout the company: allow them to move forward with a plan doomed to blow up in their face. More just me musing, but I think this could definitely be a possibility, we'll just have to wait and see.

To be clear, I'm not saying all good ideas come from Iwata, I'm certain that's not the case. But it is strange to see a guy who has been gung-ho about Directs and was a vocal supporter (iirc) of Nintendo's last Digital Event and even made an appearance to so distance himself from this last one. It seriously does look like he knew full well it was going to blow up and wanted to be well clear of the blast zone.

I don't think there's a ton of dissent within Nintendo. Iwata/Miyamoto/Takeda are the big 3 on the board of directors. They run the show.

Like I said, musing mostly.  And worth noting, those three don't necessarily agree with each other.  And it's difficult to show evidence because 1) no company admits there's problems in any part of their company and 2) in a traditional Japanese company, direct conflict and upfront disagreement are not common occurances.  But the other thing to keep in mind is that in a company or this size, three people rarely control every aspect. But like I said, just speculation about a curious situation.

Yes, Nintendo execs are smart. All they had to do was concentrate on other avenues than video games to make money.

Ya because Sony & Microsoft have made so much money from gaming.

Mario Tennis does not satisfy me, Iwata!

It really sucks that Xenoblade, Star Fox, Devil's Third, Mario Maker, Yoshi's Woolly World, Splatoon, and Fatal Frame don't exist and Nintendo is focusing exclusively on Mario Tennis.

Games announced years ago. The new announcements are Mario Tennis and Amiibo Crossing Party.

Assuming there's an acquisition.

My prediction = Tecmo Koei.

I highly doubt it. That would certainly not be a fit, but there are several others that could jive well with Nintendo. Others have already mentioned Level 5. I also think they could go after GungHo.

Exactly. That was my point.

Lol, are people seriously still thinking that Nintendo will (or even should) buy a huge publisher like Capcom? Or that extremely healthy devs/publishers like Level 5 or Bandai Namco would have any interest in being bought out by a console maker?
