With the ability to create every Mario level you can imagine, Mario Maker is turning out to be one of the best Mario games in years. However, this brings an important question: if Nintendo tries to continue the New Super Mario Bros. series, will people see it ow as underwhelming? Will Mario Maker make all future 2D Mario games inferior by comparaison?

You know it deserves the GOTY.

Probabily..... Yes.
Mario 2D are death.
PLS Nintendo, make only Mario 3D!!!!!!!!

With all the crazy potential shown with Mario Maker at NWC, I'm not sure how Nintendo could deliver if they were to pump out more 2D Marios, to be perfectly honest.

New Super Mario Bros. kinda perfected the 2D Mario formula, and considering that NSMB came out back during the early DS days, it kinda shows that 2D Mario has pretty much evolved to its fullest state.

Super Mario Maker is pretty much THE 2D Mario, imo.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

No, the can always introduce new levels, new settings, new items, new enemies, new tools, new game modes, etc etc. If ever, this will force Nintendo to introduce new elements rather than just re-iterate the same game like they did with NSMB.

Well, if Nintendo ever make a new 2d Mario game, they will need some new great ideas.
Or they can make Super Mario Maker 2 with more options, more styles, etc. ..

I get the feeling that they're going to stick with the more 3D formula for their main releases here on out, like Super Mario 3D Land and especially Super Mario 3D World. That's likely why they included the "New" engine in Mario Maker. It would only make sense if they planned to make the engine obsolete within their own personal development.

There will be more Super ---- Maker games. Yoshi, 2D Zelda, Donkey Kong, Kirby, 2D Metroid and more.

I honestly wouldn't mind since the New Super Mario Bros foruma was starting to get very bland.

They can innovate and move 2d mario fawards. New eviroments, physics and mecanics along with a gorgous new mario style. It could force them to make 2d mario better.

No, they'll change up the gameplay, same as always. Each 2D Mario has gotten its own set of powerups, enabling them to come up with new level designs.

What we *might* see is future powerups, enemies, and level features becoming DLC in some way for SMM.

Plus, recent 2D Mario games have gotten multiplayer functionality, and that's unlikely to stop any time soon, while SMM is purely single-player (in the sense of actual play). And there are some powerups that, to our knowledge, are not present in SMM that have been in 2D Mario games. Tanooki Suit, Frog Suit, Hammer Suit, Penguin Suit, Ice Flower, Mini Mushroom, Power Balloon, Super Acorn, and Yoshi's Wings, to be specific. EDIT: Missed Carrot, Super Flower, Blue Koopa Shell, Mega Mushroom, Gold Flower, Boost Star, and P-Acorn.
