Forums - Nintendo Discussion - being 'unique' has cost nintendo every recent generation!!!!

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by this uniqueness. There are generally only two to three consoles per gen to begin with, so until the most recent two gens there was no norm to make a console unique unless you compare previous gens and that is usually a bad thing to compare.  Because then the PS1 was unique.  The original XBOX was unique.  The PS3 was unique. Ect, ect.

However, ever since N64 Nintendo has failed to be able to provide the staple of third party support that made me consider them my primary source of games. NES/SNES always had stuff like Final Fantasy, nearly all the good JRPGs of the gen, as well as the best of other must have third party games. Since N64 it's generally been that they don't have it or they get the inferior version of the game, and I'm sorry but I think there are very few people, compared to who are not, who are so devoted to Nintendo that they are willing to accept buying the inferior game on their console.

I don't think it's about hate for most people. I think it is simply that they don't have the games or they have the inferior version of the game and that means people _have_ to buy a different console and in many cases (this site almost entirely excluded) that means the _only_ console they purchase.

no problem. I just need to say it in your face. hating the wii and spreading your nonsense won't change people's minds.

This is right.

I'm now filled with determination.

This is one of the dumber things I've read, Wii & DS are Nintendo's most unique handheld and console ever and sold over 250 million units of hardware, nearly 2 billion units of software and make something like $15 billion dollars in profit over 5 years.

These devices didn't hurt their reputation, 3DS & Wii U hurt Nintendo's reputation by having awful strategies that go against what made Wii/DS so successful.

The wii didn't hurt Nintendo rep? C'mon are you in denial? If the wii brand is so strong why has the wii u only sold 10mil? Because it's associated with the wii that's why.

No it didnt, ending support for Wii it in its last 2 years along with Wii U having constant droughts, high price, unappealing controller, horrible marketing and lack of new casual focused IP are what has hurt Nintendo. Nintendo needs to get back into the mindset they had in 2005-2009.

The WiiU sold only 10m by being totally unappealing to any demographic. Do you think a console like the WiiU could have been succesfull after the Gamecube? I don't think so.

Nes- same as competition

Gamecube- unique discs unique look. Moderate success

Wii- totally unique makes Nintendo billions. Complete failure as it has cost Nintendo there reputation as a GAMES console. Most gamers hate this console.

I shudder to ask your opinion on other matters. I'm going to guess that, on your scale, the Donner Party qualifies as a "moderate success," right?

LOL You guys give Nintendo too much credit. Being unique didnt make them the most popular brand in the 90's it was having third party. The reason they've fallen behind is because they lack third party. Duh

I've got a lot of consoles and the Wii is my absolute favorite. Nothing in it would have existed if they just made another playstation/xbox clone. In that case, I'd only get the opportunity to buy yet another identical console, nothing more.

Untill the Wii and DS, Nintendo put out what you would call conventional consoles and handheld devices. Since Nintendo went down the unique path they have sold a staggering 310 million unique gaming devices in which the only flop has been Wii U. So the unique approach has been justified thus far, and the Wii U failings will not deter them.
