Forums - Gaming - VR is anti local multiplayer and it will remain a niche

I played this local multiplayer game on the Rift at SXSW and it was a lot of fun:

If you would have to look at someone's face to shit talk, online gaming wouldn't be as big as it is.

You obviously have the wrong idea of how VR local multiplayer would look like. Please take the time to educate yourself and look at all the existing and fun local multiplayer experiences for VR. Like this one for example.

Sounds like the usual Nintendo rhetoric.

- CD-ROM is expensive and niche and too slow for games. Five years later: Oh we got our butts kicked by Sony, now here's our disc based GameCube.

- Online is too niche and not social. We won't focus on it. Five years later: Yeah well I guess we should make Mario Kart and Smash online.

- Game consoles should only play games and not movies. Six years later: How cool is Netflix on Wii, right guys?

And remember what they said about DLC and mobile games? Sure Nintendo is still transforming, but the transformation progress make them inconsistent.

A handheld gamer only (for now).

Do people even care about local mp anymore? And besides it is an optional thing that will work only with some games, you can always turn it off if you want.

...Let the Sony Domination continue with the PS4...

somebody must have been listening to Reggie.... If they make compelling software VR will catch on. I do agree it wont hit a critical mass. I would get it, but only use it when my wife and kids are in bed or not home. It would feel just rude to wear it around them and I don't want my kids/wife to feel like I am not even home.

VR is only for single and online multiplayer.  I wouldn't mind if Nintendo near tried that shit again.  VR isn't the future of gaming and if somehow it is...  It is a very distant future.

Riiiiiight!

Reggie says:

Then again I rmemeber reading something a year or two ago regaurding Nitnendo being interested in trying Vitural Boy again. Problem is I can't find it anymore. As the above link is all I can find on google as is Miyamoto saying that it's in contrast with the Wii U.

No.... else nintendo would be the best selling console by far.

Has anyone ever tried to market it as good for local multiplayer? This seems like the essence of a straw man thread. It also seems like local multiplayer these days is as niche as VR is likely to be.

Yes because local MP has been such a focus for Sony/MS/PC...

I am Iron Man

You are absolutely right. Plus I don't see the casuals going and buying $300 headsets.
