Then why are a lot of devs got fearful doing something different last gen? They know Playstation has the best audience for all genres but without the marketshare it had during PS1/PS2, they couldn't count on it to bring profits. Most probably, lots of devs were making games based on the common denominator on 360 which is the shooter/open world action types audience. The only thing it did was hurt the industry with lots of smaller studios closing down chasing that AAA dream when they could still make money on niche titles not needing that much bombast anyway. |
It wasn't really that devs got fearful of doing something different last gen. Some of the biggest IPs got their start on the last generation, so much so that companies feel they can continue to find success making sequels for them, such as Call of Duty and Assassin's Creed. COD likely started what became the shooter craze of last gen. It just became a shift of interest, which became shooters, so more games followed in suit to try to earn some of that profit. It happened in the SNES/Genesis days with platformers. That's just what happens with something gets really popular.
Certain IPs are still finding success, so why should they switch now? It's safer than trying new IPs, which is not always safe, especially now with how expensive making games are. Though that isn't to say other genres are gone. They've always been there. RPGs, Action, Adventure, Horror, Puzzles, and so on. Some of them appeared less because they just weren't safe to do. They didn't see profit come in, so they were made less. But they were there. They just got overshadowed by what was the current trend. You have to look a little harder to find them though.
