I recommend doing a bunch of 4-way matches, playing the Classic singleplayer on the default difficulty for all the different characters, and simply watching people fight online. There's a lots of stuff to absorb.

Also, learn to use shield and related techniques such as rolling and dodging, that's vital.
But yeah play through classic mode. And play with friends if you can

try to beat single player on level 8 without dying to unlock a secret....

But Jiggly-jumps are worst than Kirby jumps, and Kirby even has  up+B

Congrats! The only way to get better is by more practice! Playing against real players also helps a lot as CPUs can be quite predictable.
