Forums - Sales Discussion - FUD debunked :SONY made 126 billion yen in profits last fiscal year

OriGin, Not true. During the PS2 era, Sony CE was operating on profit from the 2nd year. Please read the reports.

Hardcore gaming is a bubble economy blown up by Microsoft's $7 $6 billion losses.

What exactly are you debunking??? The gaming division did poorly. The rest of Sony is doing well. Nobody has posted otherwise. This is a gaming board if you haven't noticed, so of course the gaming division will be the focus.

Also, if you are going to post financial data, POST YOUR REFERENCES. Don't just post figures without giving people a link where the information can be verified for accuracy.

titibgosse,

Sure, just click through the Annual Reports of 2001 to 2006. http://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/IR/financial/ar/2006/index.html

larry,

Not true. Sony CE lost only ¥51 billion in fiscal 2000 (Annual Report of 2001), the first year of the PS2 era. MS losses are as you described, but don't matter here because the Xbox is not a successful business Sony should copy.

but this time they would have to recover the high R&D of Cell as well.

last time in 2000 it was just the inclusion of dvd player that contributed to the losses.

However since the ps3 PP has already gone below the breakevn point losses would be reduced no doubt.

plus you have big games coming up this year from june and also during christmas.

The rest of SONY has done way better than the projections.

watch out for the new OLEDs too with a 1000 000 :1 contrast ratio.

Others ,if you havent bought an LCD/plasma please hang on for some more time.

Sony would be reducing the price of Bravias with the launch of OLEDS

thansk for your answers:

2001 -51
2002 83
2003 113
2004 67,6
2005 43,2
2006 8,7

total 264,5 billions yens

Again, what are you debunking? If you want to discuss televisions, I suggest you go to the AVS forum.

Does anyone have the 2001 financial report that shows a 200 billion gaming division loss? Even if true, at least the PS2 was selling out and not sitting in warehouses and store shelves. The sales situation between the PS2 and PS3 is like day and night.

Sure Sony as a whole did well, but think of how high those profits could've been if the gaming division didn't exist. By the way Sony as a whole posted their highest losses in 4 years for the last quarter, it was the financial year overall that they still made profit.

FishyJoe, I posted the link and titibgosse extracted the numbers for you. -Â¥51 billion in fiscal 2000 (Apr'00 to Mar'01, Annual Report of 2001). +Â¥83 billion in the following year (Annual Report of 2002).

Ok, thanks. So I'm looking at the 2001 results at:

http://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/IR/financial/ar/qfhh7c000000dh3y-att/ar2001e.pdf

And indeed 51.1 billion yen is the game division loss, not 200 billion.

The moral of the story Larry? If you're going to claim something, have your facts straight and don't make stuff up in your head. Also, if you're going to debunk something, tell us who and what you are dunbunking and don't just make up mythical boogeymen created by your paranoia.
