Forums - Nintendo - someone help me get excited for kart

Turning off weapons? You might as well go play a racing sim.

The fun of this game is being able to play with everyone which includes the ability to have someone who sucks get awesome items to be able to remain competitive and have fun. It takes real skill to be able to overcome that. Turning off weapons would just make the game way too easy.

You might as well say FF13 isn't worth getting 'cause it isn't really doing anything different, just a new story. Sometimes you just don't fix what isn't broken (see: FF12, SMS, etc.).

And by the way, saying "this isn't a flame thread" neither necessarily makes it true nor protects you from moderation.

Are you sure Mario Kart would ever be a game for you? Your gripes are kind of staples for the series (except the WiiWheel which isn't required).

He said he's a fan. Why can't people criticize Nintendo games without getting that kind of question? The Wii isn't perfect but you can't say anything negative about it without people asking you why you have 1, and this seems to apply here as well.

I have a lot of the same complaints, such as the stupid blue turtle shell which was not a staple. Rubber Banding is annoying but that's a common racing game complaint, and it's only bad on 150cc and on.

I disagree that 12-player isn't a big improvement, though, because I don't know a single person that've ever played with more than 4 on DD because who has 2 gamecubes and TVs?

There is activity on the courses, too, so I'm not sure why this complaint is made. I suppose there could be more, but there are lots of obstacles and events happening.

Still, the weapon option would be much appreciated. I would love to turn off red turtles shells as well, but at least there's a strategy to avoid those. The major point here is that there's no reason to continue to give Nintendo a free pass to NOT INNOVATE. They should have had online for DD! It's ridiculous to wait this long. Hopefully it works smoothly because I have my doubts. Brawl is supposedly breaking their network already.

If I said I liked Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit on the PS but couldn't get into the newest Need for Speed for reasons that make the game fun I would hope people ask me the same thing.

This isn't kind of any criticism on anyone, but if you don't like the core mechanics of a game then it makes sense that the game isn't for you. Tasty may have been a fan at one point but if he doesn't like the things that make Mario Kart Mario Kart that are known to be in the next iteration, then why do you think he would like it?

It's perfectly fine that he doesn't like a game and doesn't really affect anyone in any way at all.  What isn't fine is people that take things too seriously and for some odd reason think everything is some kind of personal attack.

Honestly looking through his posting history, tasty fits the profile perfectly of the angry former Nintendo fanboy who's bitter about the Wii's new direction and success in it.

I'm pretty sure we both meant certain weapons.  I specified blue turtle shell (again, not a staple).  It would just be nice to have options.  Havinga simple menu where you can uncheck certain weapons is too much to ask?

Similarly, Mario Party lets you choose "skill" only mini-games, which means you can play the real part of the game without relying on luck to win the whole time.  That's pretty much what some of the items in Mario Kart do.

A lot of people like FF12, btw, and eventually franchises have to evolve.  Online is certainly part of  the evolvement.

Edit:  Or hell, maybe I want to increase the availability of certain weapons.  Nothing wrong with more options.

Need for Speed just went more sim in the latest version.  Burnout completely changed the model for racing.  Midnight Club is getting a more full city environment.

Games evolve.  Why have motorcycles or online features in this Mario Kart?  I certainly didn't expect motorcycles, nor did I want them.  However, a lot of people are excited about it...because it's different!

Wanting the core game to remain the same, or to return to what it was in earlier mario karts (NO BLUE TURTLE SHELL), isn't such a bad thing.  I just want some options.

Edit:  I just want to clarify that I don't share the original poster's complaints in their entirety.  But to say that just because a feature (or lack of feature) is a "staple of the series" is no reason to question whether someone is a fan of a series or not.  He clearly listed all the positives and wants to be excited about the game.

Online play was not a staple.  12-player battle was not a staple.  Motorcycles certainly not a staple.  In DD, 2-player karts were not a staple.  Multiple stats for karts was not a staple in Super Mario Kart.  Games evolve, so hoping for certain features to be added or for the gameplay to be tweaked is natural, and some of his cons are good points.

MK Wii will be great, and I think think will surpass MK64 in greatness. The online was announced very early and I think it will be well done, not just tacked on as it appears to be an integral part of the game's "value". Also the 12 player thing is HUGE for me, I have been wanting more racers since the SNES version.

Mario Kart 64 is pure fail.  I downloaded that to my Wii after not playing it since it essentially came out for the N64 and boy howdy is it ever a crappy game.  The computer catches up faster than in any other in the series, the graphics are horrid, and sound is almost totally absent in multiplayer games.  Dropping framerates, bland environments.  I must have been blind back in 1997 when I played that thing.

MK:DD was personlly my favorite of the series, and about the only one from which I actually derived any real enjoyment.  It's smooth, looks good and the controls are the best.  The computer's cheating was at an all-time low in here.  The rest I consider foolish purchases that I must have made either under duress or during a period of mental fatigue.  I got the original free with my SNES, which is the only reason I ended up with it.

The GBA Mario Kart is only slightly less crappy than the N64 game.

Mario Kart is my nemesis.  No game series has ever boiled my blood like this one.  I once tossed the original across a room.  The evil damn thing still works.

Sorry you felt that way, Resident_Hazard.

I'd just like to point out that Brawl has a weapon selection screen. There's no reason Mario Kart can't have one.
