Do you mean this gen, or in general?
PlayStation has always had a broader global base of support right from PS1.
Even if you look at last gen PS3 ended up winning in 2 sales "territories" as tracked by VG Chartz (Europe, and Rest of World) whereas Wii and 360 each won only one (Japan and NA respectively). And if you break it down by country it means PS3 will have won more individual countries than either Wii or 360 because Europe + rest of world = vastly more countries than NA & Japan. So basically Nintendo and Xbox compete strongly in the 2 (or 3 if you count UK) biggest markets, but PS has the rest of the world.
As a hardware maker Sony is still generally regarded as a producer of quality products. That does matter.
And of course Sony did nothing wrong with the PS4 launch. They didn't necessarily get everything right, and indeed PS4 would have had a much tougher time if MS, especially, hadn't got a few things so terribly wrong.
