I think Bethesda like having very long waiting periods between their big games. The long wait does a few nice things for them. First off, it creates hype, because up to a point, as long as you're not neglecting the franchise(s) for a decade or so, the more you make people wait, the more they want what you have. Second, the idea of finally getting that new entry, and how awesome it will be builds up in their mind, to the point where it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. At that point, unless they put out something that's clearly a total stinker, it's already game of the year in people's minds, even with very minimal improvements. Fallout 4 is a great example of this. People crowned it basically upon announcement, and the fact that the game ended up being barely better, or hell.....even a step back from Fallout 3 and New Vegas in many regards, didn't matter in the least. And finally, it makes every time you launch one of these games that much bigger of an event. Bethesda, I get the sense want their major releases to be very much following in Rockstar's footsteps, where you might just get one or two for the whole gen, because that way when they do come out....when Rockstar drops a GTA, or Bethesda launches a new Fallout or Elder Scrolls....everyone pays attention not just because those are big franchises that are critically acclaimed, massively popular, etc, etc, but because hey.....you might not see another one of these for quite some time. For all you know, this is once in a gen boys. Get it while we're givin!
In Bethesda's case it's rather transparent of course, because they don't quality test nearly enough, they don't put a very strong emphasis on strong writing, and they don't do much with their engine.....so they don't really have any good excuse to take as long as Rockstar to put out a game. Plus they don't do multiplayer. But it's a strategy that will work for them regardless, so good for them I guess.
