The fact is 1st party has been in order for a long time, there's been no mismanagement from Shu or the worldwide studios team, they've gotten a lot of great games on the system and have fully supported their 1st party studios, hence why they're given time and resources to make so many new IPs this generation.
I think Sony uses the term "1st party" to refer to anyone they work with now, that makes exclusives, so that's how I'll use the term, just make sure there's no confusion.
I am also not going make a distinction between high budget and lower budget or games made by big studios or smaller ones, because quite frankly they're all games, which should be judged on their own merits of quality.
I keep seeing people claiming that Sony aren't willing to invest in new IP because of the risks, but we've already had 1)Knack, 2)Driveclub, 3)The Order, 4)Bloodborne.
It's been confirmed that 5)Guerrilla Games, 6)Sony Bend, 7)SCE Japan, 8)London, 9)Media Molecule and 10)Quantic Dream all of unannounced new IPs in development.
Then there's 11)Deep Down (Capcom), 12)Kill Strain (SCE San Diego Studio), 13)Let it Die (Grasshopper).
Also 14)Drawn to Death (BJSDA and San Diego), 15)WiLD (Wild Sheep), 16)Rime (Tequila Works), 17)The Tomorrow Children (Q-Games and Japan), 18)Alienation (Housemarque), 19)Until Dawn (Supermassive Games), 20)Everybody's Gone to the Rapture (The Chinese Room and SSM).
That's all of the games I can think of right now that are new IPs slated for PS4, as exclusives.
It's clear that Sony's invested a lot in these games.
Then there are titles that were announced years ago, but never canceled like Agent, The Last Guardian and Eight Days.
Just as Until Dawn has made it's reappearance any one of those games could also come back too.
I don't think any other platform holder has made such a huge investment in new IPs as Sony has, I'd call that having their priorities in the right place.
Pretty much all of these games have been in development for years, so it's safe to say that many of the ones that are yet to be unveiled will be some time soon, especially from studios that are owned by Sony and many class as AAA.
I'll also say that Shinobi602 (the well known insider) has stated on his Twitter that much of this chat about Sony relying on 3rd party for their E3 this year is coming from a place of fear. According to him quite a few of those Sony owned studios are ready to show off what they've been working on.
Maybe with E3 being right around the corner people should wait and see before jumping the gun.
It quite frankly doesn't make sense for Sony to take a step back from making exclusives and rely only on multiplats, or to even reduce their overall output of exclusives throughout the generation on the whole.
They also don't need to use a tonne of their conference time to market 3rd party games, not when they already sell by themselves on Playstation 4, it's just not logical to think they'd need to.
Seriously a few games get delayed into early (I repeat early 2016!!!) and people start losing their minds!
Tonnes of stuff is in development, much of it likely at the point now where we'll start to soon see a lot of new stuff announced.
E3 will no doubt be largely about the big PS4 exclusives coming in over the next 12 months, later conferences for smaller titles or games that aren't so close to release.
I think people need to chill out!
