Rumors have recently been going around that Konami is moving away from hardcore game developement. I honestly don't really care if they don't make anything new, as I haven't cared about anything they've done for over a decade. I only have a little bit of nostalgia for their franchises, as I never grew up owning any of their games. I've just played a few here and there. I've played a lot of their more recent games, but I've honestly thought they were just not good, the prime example being Lords of Shadow.
That being said, I understand that they are a huge peice of gaming culture. Out of respect for that, I recently bought a few of their games off of the Virtual Console, and I get it. So far, I've been playing Contra III and Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow, and they are both seriously awesome. Aside from some crappy writing in the ladder, I can't really think of any big flaws in either. I get the touch, and once I beat these, I plan on buying Castlevania IV and Dracula X next. Maybe even Contra and Super C when I'm ready for another ass kicking. I'm definitely buying MGS: 3D, since I loved the demo.
But that brings me to my worry. While Konami has been pretty awesome about it's legacy support, will it all end now? Will I never get to continue exploring my new found love for the company by playing Dawn of Sorrow, Order of Ecclesia, and Contra 4? What about the N64 or the inevitable GCN virtual console. Is this the end? I really hope not, as retro Konami is getting up there with Capcom (though not quite that good) as becoming one of my favorite publishers. It would be a travesty to not be able to salvage some of their old games before they inevitably refocus to areas other than console/handheld gaming.
