Forums - Gaming - Does Lack of Backwards Compatibility Device and HD Remakes Tie in Together?

Backwards compatabilty is always a very requested feature in new consoles but at times like this generation the XBO and PS4 were unable to do backwards comatabilty due to new architecture.  Because of this the X360 and PS3 simply were not able to.  The WiiU on the other hand is capable of such features, but one requested peripheral has been requested dating back to the PS3 and X360 days.  An add-on that allows us to play our old games.

Sony went so far as to filing a patent for such an item. So why is it we still do not have such an item after all these years?  Is it impossible or too expensive?  Or does the easy money of reselling old games as HD remasters have a hand in this choice?  Its hard to tell one way or the other but this generation has certainly had a lot of remasters including The Last of Us, Halo MCC, Metro Redux, God of War, etc.  The list goes on and on.  This isn't to say remasters are good or bad, in fact they offer a breath of new life and give us a reason to revisit these titles.  Speaking from a competitive and multiplayer driven view, revisiting Gears of War will be a delight.  After all, the game in 2015 is dead when it comes to multiplayer and I'm certain a backwards compatible addon device wouldn't change that, but on the opposite spectrum remaking the game would.

But how do you all feel about so many remasters?  Are you ok with it?  Do you think this is why we still don't have a backwards compatible add on device?

I believe that them not including BC saves them some money but at the same time they also know that by doing this it allows them to charge users for games on their previous system and slap a little coat of paint on it or none at all and so far it's worked and now people are more or less "who cares about BC", well enough of them to drown out those that do care about BC because we're now into the 2nd gen of no BC and nothing has been changed much so it;s probably safe to say if there's a next gen the same will happen.

This is why I'm more or less fine with gaming primarily on PC first because the majority of my games will work for years and years, having an upressed remake is nice and isn't as harmful to me since I've got one system that I built and I don't need to worry about justifying my system since I;ve already got countless games on it and it's more or less always going to be BC, for the consoles I'd say BC is a must at least for me and it's why Wii U gets my favour first, the other two I find it hard to justify buying one just yet because there's already little they offer me and it's mostly been remakes and remasters to try justifying themselves for not having no BC and I find that a negative reason to buy a system like that.

Mankind, in its arrogance and self-delusion, must believe they are the mirrors to God in both their image and their power. If something shatters that mirror, then it must be totally destroyed.

I would say so... Maybe I wasn't paying enough attention or I just forgot it but I don't remember having this many "remaster" announcements in the previous gen

PC Specs: CPU: 7800X3D || GPU: Strix 4090 || RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000 || Main SSD: WD 2TB SN850

unless you want hardware that costs $600 BC isn't an option this gen.  no conspiracy,.. just cold hard facts: the new architecture doesn't run old architecture software.  so unless you a forced bundeled last gen console inside your console for an additional $200 just stop bitching about it already.  wiiU looks expansive compared to the ps4/xbox right now and it is the bundeled wii insides the wiiU that drives a lot of that.  so here is your options:

A)  expensive hardware for shitty "specs" with BC included

B) cost effective hardware with decent "specs" without BC.

BC is sooo fucking overrated that both MSony made the right choice here.

next gen will probably have BC due to probably supporting the same architecture.

Though I'm talking about an add on decive, not built in

The wiiu might got backwards compatibility but nintendo still released HD remakes and its not true backwards compatible without having the normal wii controler the for majority of games. I think its mainly third party publishers pushing for this trend just like with crossgen.

But how would it look like? Like mega CD? i think this would be uncomfortable to use

No BWC will save them money and make them more money with the remasters.

But there was a study that people that had BWC PS3 rarely used it at all. So I believe Sony decided that if its rarely used then might as well take it off and save money. I'd have to agree with this because I have a BWC PS3 and I rarely used it. It was a nice feature and will always like to have but I don't think it's something we really need.

Makes me wonder how many Wii U owners really use it to play original Wii games?

I would assume similar to an External HDD.

I'd honestly rather have access to all my games on one system than a hand full of older, repolished ones. PC never has to deal with this shit. People brag about a lot of things when it comes to PC, but the biggest reason I've considered converting is that I can a large amount of games on Steam, regardless of console generation. When 9th gen comes, all my 8th, 7th, 6th, etc gen games will be playable on that one PC.

Remasters are nice, but they are solutions to a problem that frankly should not exist.
