180 million? That's pretty bold prediction.

*Sigh* the PS1 did and the PS2 is poised to do the same even easier than the PS1 did. PS1 in production from 1995 to 2005. PS2 from 2000 to *2010 (we're in 2008 and the console still has games coming out for it. You really think it can't keep going for atleast another 2years?) |
PS2 can, although the system is dying, which means it's not going to keep up long. Even PS2 will have hard time reaching 10 years. NES lasted from 1983 to 2003, that's 20 years, and it got its last game in 1995, but the system was considered dead after SNES came out. So as Rath said, even if it gets supported for that long, doesn't mean it's going to sell that long.

Sony has repeatedly stated that they want the PS3 to Last 10 years. This is when at least for me the only real notable game that came out for it was Devil May Cry 4. Many of the most hyped PS3 Games after Metal Gear Solid 4 don't come out until this fall or Winter. I see no problem taking a lower number then the actual sales data for PS3 for the past year and spreading it out for another nine years Console PS3 Total 8,924,441 |
Even if it gets support, it doesn't mean it will sell 10 years. Sony can promise 10 years of support, but it can't promise ten years of sales. Besides, looking at the sales patterns of losing and winning consoles, sales will decline over time. Maybe it would still sell in 2016, but we are talking about just few consoles a year, which doesn't make financially any sense to anyone in the chain. You could say, that as long as Sony can keep up cutting price and make new different kind of bundles, it will keep up struggling, but 50M LT will be a decent achievement for PS3. Sure it will get few killer apps, but so does its competitors.

I don't think the PS3 will do the same as PS2, but it won't be a complete failure like many seem to think. I think Nintendo will sell a crapload of consoles during its 5 year lifespan, but once a new generation Nintendo console is out, people will swiftly move from the Wii to the next console. Although PS3 won't sell as much during the 5 years, I think it will continue to sell after the generation is done for quite a while like the last couple of PlayStation consoles. |
Do you know why PSX and PS2 kept selling? The same reason why NES kept still selling. They were in the same position as Wii is right now, they were winning consoles and got the best 3rd party support because they were winning. Expect Sony to kill PS3 rather quickly when PS4 comes out and Wii keeping selling. And who said the BD winning will benefit PS3? Yes it will, for a six months to a year, after that we have cheaper and better BD players out.

The real test for the PS3 is from when Metal Gear Solid 4 comes out into the early part of 2009 when a lot of highly touted games for this system come out. before this stretch and a lot of the games were new series and while some of them are successful some where not. I am going to wait to see how the PS3 performs during this period and it should perform a whole lot better befor I pass judgement. If I remeber correctly sales of the PS2 were hampered for the first couple of years due to the successs of the original Playstation and that what I believe is happening now. I still buy a lot of PS2 JRPG's but that is because I am waiting for games like Valkrie Chronicle, White Knight Chronicles, Last Remnant, Final Fantasy XIII and Disgaea 3. Also the PS3 is still the Only Blu-ray player that meets all the Standards of the Blu-ray association for the new Blu-ray movies and can meet different ones if they change again. Until this can be rectfied the PS3 still makes the most sense for a Blu- ray player.
Systems I own (Games)
Sega: Dreamcast (40) , Saturn (25), Genesis (50), Masters System (10), Game Gear (20)
Sony: PS1 (8), PS2 (60) , PS3 (5), PSP (12)
Atari: 2600 (18) , 7800 (10), Lynx (10)

PS3 would need MGS 4 earlier than that, good thing for it, that GTA4 is soon coming out (although multiplatform, but it doesn't change the fact that GTA4 is in PS3 library). Now, the longer it takes for the system sellers to come, the longer competition is making a gap. Year from now, PS3 is where Wii is at the moment, and Wii still has sold twice the PS3 numbers. In 2009, it's propable, that the PS3 yearly sales start to decline, or even if they would still go up to same level with Wii, Wii isn't going to magically stop selling, when it has the largest library and biggest 3rd party support. And in order to keep sales high, you need to constantly have a system seller coming. As i said, PS3 will benefit for six months to a year from the BD victory. When the better and cheaper models arrive with rewritable players, there's nothing much why you should buy PS3 over them. So, what makes PS3 the only upgradable player?

What makes PS3 the only or one of the few upgradeable Blu-Ray Players is that it can accept patches from the Internet or from a memory stick. I don't believe that there is anothe Blu- Ray player out there yet that can do it. Metal Gear Solid gets released on June 12th of this year in the states. I guess I minced my words a little bit any way I meant from the time it is released until Final Fantasy XIII comes out is its test. I believe that the PS3 will be like the PS2 which started out with slow sales due the original Playstation. The Wii has the advantage of the PS3 and will likely maintain it, but it is possible for all the systems to perform well i don't see any of the systems selling under 60 million for this generation

So are you sure you can't upgrade other players from disc? I mean even my DVD-player can be upgraded from CD or DVD. And i see only one console this gen topping 60M.

I expect PS3 to reach 70 million consoles by end of its lifespan. With the PS4 arriving half way through its life span say 2011/12 the PS3 will crawl towards 70 million. |
Did you create this thread to bash the console? Since it seems you really dont need an answer since you've had it all along.
