Forums - Sales Discussion - X360 vs PS2... who will win?

I would buy another PS2 or a Wii before I even consider a PS3.

Around the Network

15 million PS2 sold compared to 10 miliion 7 hundred thousand just over 4 million more PS2 sold worldwide then PS3 since PS3 launch PONED by thier own console go PS2.

the wii sold almost 22 million so its diffinetly teabagging the PS2! by 7 Million in the same time

PS1 outsold Gamecube and Xbox in various regions of the world as late as 2004 I believe.

Genesis outsold Saturn in late 97' and 98' in some places...

SNES outsold Saturn and PS1 through mid 1996 pretty much everywhere.

NES outsold Genesis in 1989/1990 I believe, though I don't have numbers for that.

Wow, I hadn't realized that but it IS the PS2. :)

What about Ps2 vs. Ps3? Hows that going?

VGChartz Hardware data for the period 05th Jan 2008 to 08th Mar 2008:

ConsolePS3PS2
Total
1,903,180
1,352,926

Total from PS3's launch (region tables bellow):

Total PS2 = 12,181,279

Total PS3 = 10,736,384

At least it's not as bad as the 360. It's actually pretty good if we consider  it launched at $500-600 and that mistake cost Sony lots of unit sales until way past mid-2007

Wow.... I did not expect a Sony fan would point out how a more expensive console is being outsold by a far cheaper console.

It seems PS3 is only struggling in the U.S.

From the launch of the PS3:

ConsoleWiiPS3X360PS2
Total
22,400,908
10,768,188
12,289,179
14,666,160

I don't think there is any console that has continued to be outsold by its successor past its release for so long, painting this in the light of the PS2's success against the 360 is an interesting spin but it raises just as many questions as the PS3s struggle to keep up as well.

I did like how you tried to put the spin on it that over the past 8 weeks things have been different though.  But really the point is that since the PS3s launch its lost ground on its predecessor just like the 360. You're basically saying well look if we look at the longterm the 360 did bad....and if we look at this period where the PS3 has done well and the 360 has slowed down etc...etc...why not take this comparison to the middle of last year when the 360 was blazing and the PS3 was slowing down??

I really do like this comparisons to be honest because it is interesting, but please if you're going to do them try to portray them in an open and honest light rather than showing the 360 comparison for the long term then switching to a more favorable short term comparison when the PS3 is brought in. Your last post was set up from start to finish to highlight what you liked and hide what you didn't.

To be blunt the PS3 and 360 don't have to live up to the PS2, the PS2 was and is a sales phenom and its a gold standard not a measuring stick.  I really don't think this diminishes what the 360 and PS3 have done nearly as much as it highlights what the PS2 has done tbh.

Good to know, didn't know those facts. I wish VGC had all that past data, would be unlimited fun at work

Anyway, I still find it pretty amazing that the PS2 is selling on par with the 360 2.5 years after 360's launch... Also, this should be very depressing to all 360 owners...

Incorrect, PS3 had different launch dates for the 3 regions. See my post above...
