Do you plan on getting a Switch soon? If so you may want to wait for Stars before picking up Moon, but you can't go wrong either way.

No, I don't think I'll get a Switch anytime soon.
I'm not sure what will be my first game aside from Mario Kart 7, but Pokémon Moon is on my list.

If you like RPGs, there's a number available. The only ones I have played personally are Bravely Default (classic turn based), Fire Emblem Awakening, and Fire Emblem Fates (both tactical RPGs). Bravely Default is a sticky one. I don't regret my purchase but the final leg of the game is just...ugh. It's bad. I hear Bravely Second is a lot of what made Bravely Default great but without the terrible final chapter. Fire Emblems are both really good and the good news is there's a demo of Awakening available on the eShop.
If you like platformers, I mean, it's a Nintendo machine :P . There's Kirby Triple Deluxe and Kirby Planet Robobot, which are classic Kirby so not hard but very fun and upbeat. There's Shovel Knight if you haven't played it on some other machine, inspired by Duck Tales, Mega Man, and other platformers of the olden days and I personally really like it. There's Azure Striker Gunvolt, a Mega Man type game I've played a bit (I think the second one is out as well), and there's more to play. Azure Striker has a demo on the eShop.
One unique franchise to the DS line of handhelds is the Etrian Odyssey series. It's a hybrid of classic turn based JRPGs and old school first person dungeon crawling. The production values aren't overly extravagant, but I find them fun and interesting. Etrian Odyssey Untold: Millenium Girl has a demo on the eShop so give it a whirl and see what you think.
And if you like Zelda, Ocarina of Time 3D and Majora's Mask 3D are the definitive versions of those games and fit very well on a handheld. I'm sure others can give you even more.

Thank you! I'm thinking about Majora's Mask, Etrian Odyssey and Bravely Default/Second too!
